Abstract

The Sue Fawn Chung Collection on Asians in Nevada (1963-2015) consists of materials collected by Dr. Sue Fawn Chung in the course of her research on the history of Asians in Nevada. The collection contains interviews, correspondence, and biographical materials primarily focusing on Chinese and Japanese residents in Nevada, but also includes other communities such as Filipinos and Koreans. Some materials are photocopies of original documents and photographs dating between 1913 and 1960.

Scope and Contents Note

The Sue Fawn Chung Collection on Asians in Nevada (1963-2015) consists of materials collected by Dr. Sue Fawn Chung during her research on the history of Asians in Nevada. The collection contains United States Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services forms, research papers, Asian American newspaper and magazine clippings, and correspondence and reports regarding Japanese internment during World War II. The collection also contains biographical materials primarily focusing on Chinese and Japanese communities in Nevada, but also include other communities such as Filipinos and Koreans. Other materials include interview transcripts, directories for Asian businesses and organizations, and publications from Asian communal, educational, and political organizations. Some materials are photocopies of original documents and photographs dating between 1984 and 1960. Additionally, some materials are in Chinese and Japanese.

Collection is open for research, with the exception of materials that are restricted to protect personally identifiable information. Restrictions are noted at the file level of this inventory and will be open for research use January 1, 2065.

Biographical / Historical Note

Dr. Sue Fawn Chung is a history professor with an expertise in Asian American history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1965; her master's degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1967; and her doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975. Dr. Chung first taught in UNLV beginning in 1975, later serving numerous administrative positions in UNLV. Outside of UNLV, Dr. Chung is active in community organizations associated with historic preservation, the humanities, and promoting Asian and Pacific Islander social and economic issues in Nevada.

Acquisition Note

Materials were donated in several accessions by Dr. Sue Fawn Chung from 1993 to 2021; accession numbers 93-21, 2004-05, 2015-038, and 2021-123. Accessions 93-21, 2004-05, and 2015-038 were combined into 2015-041.

Processing Note

Materials were processed by Marie Imus in 1995. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Lindsay Oden revised and enhanced the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2017, Joyce Moore processed an accession to the collection. In 2019, Jimmy Chang added one folder to the collection and revised the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2021, Tammi Kim processed an addition to the collection and updated the finding aid.
