The Arnie and Sheila Wexler Professional Papers consist of the professional materials dating from 1976 to 2006 of Arnie and Sheila Wexler, compulsive gambling counselors from New Jersey. The papers include documents, articles, videotapes, and audiocassettes on various aspects of problem, compulsive, and pathological gambling. The papers also contain correspondence; audio and visual documentation of various television interviews, public lectures, and educational workshops; and newspaper and magazine articles about the Wexlers and the topic of gambling addiction.

Biographical / Historical Note

Compulsive gambling counselor Arnie Wexler grew up in Brooklyn, New York and was a self-proclaimed compulsive gambler until 1968. Wexler turned his addiction recovery into a career, educating and counseling others about compulsive gambling. Arnie and his wife Sheila Wexler are both certified compulsive gambling counselors from New Jersey that treat patients with compulsive gambling addiction, train healthcare professionals, and consult with casino employees nationwide. The Wexlers have co-written numerous articles on the subject of compulsive gambling. Arnie Wexler has practiced as a compulsive gambling counselor since the 1970s, served as the executive director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, and appeared as an expert on many television programs. Sheila Wexler is a certified alcohol and drug counselor as well as a certified compulsive gambling counselor and has worked in the field since 1977.

Processing Note

Material was processed by special collections staff. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Hannah Robinson wrote the collection description and subsequently entered the data into ArchivesSpace. In 2024, Sarah Jones updated the finding aid to reflect one VHS tape being digitized by an outside vendor.
