Abstract

The Las Vegas Monorail Records (1971-1980) consist of articles, newspaper clippings, agency reports, and correspondence concerning the 1970s effort to construct a Las Vegas, Nevada mass-transit monorail system. Materials document the project conception, development, and ultimate failureroughout the 1970s.

Biographical / Historical Note

In the early 1970s, Las Vegas, Nevada transit authorities designed a mass-transit monorail system that would connect the Downtown and Las Vegas Strip areas with McCarran Airport. While the plan progressed significantly throughout the 1970s, it ultimately stalled and was abandoned amid concerns of cost and need. Additionally, the national Watergate Scandal of the mid-1970s damaged the project's possibility of completion, as some of its private developers were associated with President Nixon.

In the early 2000s, plans for a Las Vegas Monorail were renewed. In 2004, the first phase of the Las Vegas Monorail was completed and opened to the public. Much like the 1970s plan, the monorail system aimed to connect the Downtown and Strip areas with McCarran Airport and possibly the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus. As of 2014, the monorail serves only the immediate Strip area.

Material was processed by UNLV Special Collections staff in 2007. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Ian M. Baldwin revised and enhanced the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2017 Joyce Moore completed the finding aid and published it.
