Askew, Dennis Lee

Content: Las Vegas native Dennis Askew grew up as the son of long-time Sands Hotel & Casino craps dealer and box man, Johnny Askew. He discusses Las Vegas in the 1950s and 1960s and his experiences working as a busboy at the Sands in the late 1960s. After his graduation from Valley High School in 1971, he formed his own band Universe, which had success in Las Vegas and southern California. By the late 1970s, the band had broken up and Askew began working at Odyssey Records in downtown Las Vegas. From 1980-1985 he wrote a weekly column (Las Vegas Sun newspaper) on the Las Vegas rock scene called "Rock Talk" and later did a radio and TV show by the same name before he moved to southern California permanently in 1985
