History of Nursing in Southern Nevada Oral History Project |
part of MS-00784; On March 11th, 2005, Dr. Rosemary Witt (born in Columbia, Iowa) is interviewed by Maureen Madison-Kane and Dr. Margaret Louis, in her office in the School of Nursing on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Campus. The interview covers the history and growth of the UNLV School of Nursing and Dr. Witt’s recollections since relocating to Las Vegas in 1971. Witt discusses how drastically the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus has changed from the time she first arrived, stating that only Frazier Hall and the Grant Hall Student Union were here when she began working at UNLV. She states that the weather in Nevada helped her to make the permanent move from Seattle to Las Vegas. She was Chair of the department and the School of Nursing, and explains that as Chair she could not serve on some committees that she otherwise would have wanted to serve on. Rosemary compares UNLV’s nursing programs to some of the other local schools’ nursing programs, such as those at Touro University and the University of Southern Nevada. To conclude, Witt expresses her opinion on distance education, acknowledging its progression and purpose, yet adhering to her belief that in-classroom, hands on learning is the best educational option or route for nursing students in Nevada. |
