F849.L35 T78 2008 Harriet was born on August 22, 1935, and spent her childhood years in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama. When she was a teenager, she marched and protested against various forms of social injustices, often being arrested in the process. By her early twenties, Harriet was organizing unions for the state AFL-CIO on Florida. By 1962, she and her family relocated to Las Vegas. In 1965, Harriet marched with civil rights activists in Selma, Alabama. After that, she worked in Nevada on behalf of school integration, welfare rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, Campaign for Choice, and against nuclear waste. Harriet directed Hubert Humphrey's presidential campaign in Nevada in 1968, she was campaign manager for southern Nevada for the George McGovern presidential campaign in the 1970s, she served as the Southern Nevada Aide for Governor Mike O'Callaghan from 1974 to 1978, and from 1983 to 1986, she worked in Washington, D.C. as the Foreign Affairs Aide for Congressman Harry Reid. Harriet traveled across various states recruiting women to run for public office, she served on the National Organization for Women's National Board, and in 1992, she returned to Washington, D.C. to work as a lobbyist for the Feminist Majority Foundation. In 2000, Harriet returned to Las Vegas to continue her work in Democratic politics and served as Political Director for the Nevada State Democratic Party in Clark County. |

Interviewed by Nathalie Martinez and Barbara Tabach. Born in Columbia, Julia was able to immigrate with her family when she was six years old. The family lived in Chicago and later in Phoenix. She moved to Las Vegas in 2013 and taught learners with Special Education Needs at the elementary level. In 2021, she was named the National Teacher of the Year; believe the first Latina and the only Nevada to ever hold the distinction. She personally received the award from Dr. Jill Biden.

Boyd School of Law. His various achievements in the community and nation led him to become recognized and awarded the Arturo Cambeiro Hispanic of the Year Award in 2011.
