Brandenburg, Mark OH-03243 2017 September 22 Building Las Vegas Oral History Project Las Vegas native Mark Brandenburg, chairman of the Fremont Street Experience, grew up with and became co-owner of Las Vegas's oldest hotel. Opened as the Hotel Nevada in 1906, it became the Sal Sagev in 1931, and in 1955 was renamed the Golden Gate. Brandenburg's parents, a daughter of West Virginia and a son of Kentucky, met and married in Las Vegas; there they also divorced after two children. When he was about eight years old, Brandenburg's mother married Italo Ghelfi, one of several owners of the Golden Gate Casino, where she had worked as a cocktail server. Brandenburg attended local public schools: Sierra Vista and Ruby Thomas elementary schools, K.O. Knudson and William Orr junior high schools, and Las Vegas Valley High School. He matriculated to Stanford, where he earned a B.A. in philosophy, and to The University of California, Hastings School of Law. After practicing law locally for 10 years, Brandenburg joined his stepfather in 1990 to manage the Golden Gate, and he and his brother Craig bought out the other partners. Ghelfi died in 1994, and Brandenburg continued to co-own and manage the property until he sold his last interest in 2016. In the early 1990s the Golden Gate joined with other downtown properties to form the Fremont Street Experience (FSE), a feature designed to create excitement and attract tourists to Downtown Las Vegas. The creation and management of the FSE is case study of a complex public-private partnership with many moving parts. Brandenburg weaves the history of the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino with that of the more recent Fremont Street Experience, creating throughout a tapestry of family history with threads from Italy to Oakland, California, and from Kentucky and West Virginia that all converge at One Fremont Street, Las Vegas.
