Building Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Former mayor of Las Vegas who arrived in Nevada in 1982 to help run Thriftimart, the family's grocery business where advertising and promotions skills helped to turn profits in areas other than gaming. Fletcher Jones was her next endeavor. She used marketing skills to enhance the business with family-friendly TV exposure and then decided to run for mayor. Some of her accomplishments running the city include the Fremont Street Experience, homeless services initiatives, and negotiations resulting in the formation of the government center, Smith Center, and Premier Outlet Mall. Deciding not to run for a second term, she ran unsuccessfully for Governor. Fortunately, she was invited to manage Government Relations for Harrah's (now Caesars) and is still there after almost two decades. |

African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Ora Bland migrated to Las Vegas in 1953 from Vicksburg, Mississippi. Her husband was a radiologist and worked in Area 51 of the Nevada Test Site. He never shared information about his work and would sometimes stay at the Test Site for a week or more without coming into the city. Bland remembers the Westside business community when the Brown Derby, the Mexican store, Johnson Malt Shoppe, and Bravo Market existed. An extremely independent person, she handled most of the childcare and worked at the downtown post office (now MOB Museum) for 20 years. A community of walkers, Bland will still walk to the downtown area from her F Street home when she wants a restaurant meal. This was the one activity that ceased during the COVID pandemic. Her living environment is impacted by many homeless individuals. It is her belief and that of her neighbors, that there are adequate homes available for the homeless population but available housing restricts alcohol, drugs of all types even legal ones, and rules are strictly enforced.
Subjects: Nevada Test Site; Brown Derby; homeless; post office worker
No restrictions: Collection is open for research. Where use copies do not exist, production of use copies is required before access will be granted; this may delay research requests. Advanced notice is required. |

Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Session 1: Keith Boman attended medical school after growing up in Las Vegas. Learning his craft at George Washington University was not fun because he missed the desert. But he was able to work hard enough to earn a covenanted spot at Harbor-UCLA Medical School in Torrance, CA. After four years in Washington, DC, was back in the West. Here in Las Vegas, Boman had attended Bishop Gorman High School, developed a love for the arts and sports, and enjoyed the care of several mentors. A favorite memory is that at seventeen, he traveled alone to Los Angeles to see the musical "Mame." The experience was life changing. Subjects: Bishop Gorman, George Washington University, Harbor-UCLA Medical School, John Harrington, State Welfare Board; Session 2: The second and final session concentrated on Dr. Boman's role in the founding of the Smith Center. He formed a relationship with Fred Smith because of Smith's friendship with his parents. The Smith and Bomans along with other early families enjoyed legendary parties at Lake Mead. Smith asked Boman to serve on the board of the Reynolds Foundation. When the 'ask' for the Smith Center was made by Don Snyder for $50m dollars, Boman wasn't sure because that amount had never been granted by the Reynolds Foundation prior to this time. But to everyone's surprise Fred Smith said 'yes' and later increased that amount to $100m when the down-turn in the economy forced many donors to decrease their gifts. The surprise of the entire Smith Center saga was when Fred Smith approached Boman with the idea of naming the Boman Pavilion for Keith's parents. Boman loves the Smith Center and agrees with the song sang by Jennifer Hudson (Take Care Of This House From the musical "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue") at the elegant evening that opened the house. Subjects: Fred Smith, Reynolds Foundation, Don Snyder, Betsy Fretwell, Super Summer Theatre, Animal Foundation |
