Benavidez arrived in Las Vegas after her family spent two years in Mexico so her and her brother could learn Spanish. The family's intention was to stay in Las Vegas, but in fact it was suppose to be a pit stop on the way back to San Francisco. Benavidez and her family have remained in Las Vegas ever since. Maria Benítez is the image of a hardworking and determined Salvadoran woman. After facing adversity amidst the Salvadorian Civil War she talks about her journey as a nurse in El Salvador and migrating to the United States. Here in Las Vegas, she has worked as a cook on the Strip, been an active member of her church, and supported the education of her children selling pupusas. Bennett, Marion OH-02433 2009 July 02 Documenting the African American Experience in Las Vegas CT247.B75 2009; Reverend Marion Bennett provides details of the NAACP's historic involvement in the integration of casinos and other businesses, schools, and housing. He was hired as pastor of Zion Methodist Church in 1960 and served in that capacity for 44 years. Through the years, Reverend Bennett served twice as president of the NAACP and worked with such notables as J. David Hoggard, Lubertha Johnson, and Woodrow Wilson. He recalls the Freedom Fund dinners, the integration of the work force in casinos, and the protests that were held in Las Vegas. Reverend Bennett was deeply involved in the commitment to integrate blacks into all areas of life in Las Vegas. He lists all those who worked so hard back in the sixties, like Jim Anderson, Charles Keller, Eleanor Walker and many others. He cites the process of integration, which included the Consent Decree against Las Vegas casinos, the Fair Housing Act passed when Paul Laxalt was governor, and creation of the Economic Opportunity Board. In his closing comments, Reverend Bennett thanks those who fought for freedom and civil rights before him, and admonishes future generations to stay vigilant. He believes in helping other generations as his generation was helped by the ones that came before. yes 0

Berger, Kenneth L. OH-03603 2019 April 15 Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project Kenneth Berger did not find his calling until after his stint in the military. Though he did not fly planes in the Air Force, flying was his passion that he realized after securing a position at EG& G, a national defense contractor. For 20 years, Berger flew passengers to the Grand Canyon. Berger enjoyed hunting and joined the Rifle and Gun Club initially to participate with his company on the pistol team for the annual Corporate Challenge. He missed the mark on his first outing but learned to load his own ammunition and made the team every year afterwards. After retirement, he became a volunteer at the Club and serves as a monitor especially for non-club members to ensure safety protocols. Berger, Pete OH-03628 2019 June 14 Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project Peter Berger is a pit boss who began at the Stardust as a dealer in 1958. On his way to Los Angeles, he stopped in Las Vegas and never left. Berger worked the Desert Inn, Sands, Monte Carlo, California Club, Sahara, Bonanza, Aladdin, Circus Circus, Tropicanna, Dunes and finally found home at the Ellis Island in 1997. At 91 years of age, he is still excited about gaming. He diligently walks around the gaming tables monitoring the action five days a week. In 1955, after a stint in the US Air Force, Berger and his wife Dolly moved from New York to Las Vegas. He soon found his way to the gaming industry. And the rest is history. Bhatnagar, Rakesh K. OH-03422 2018 April 10 Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project Born in 1947, the year of Indian Independence from England, Rakesh Bhatnagar grew up in the shadows of a civil war between Muslim and Hindu citizens who had lived as one for centuries. He immigrated to the United States after a university education and having taught chemistry and biology for 6 years to high school students. Rakesh entered the USA on an education visa so enrolled at UNLV immediately to earn his second bachelor's degree in Hotel Administration. He completed his schooling in 1978 having worked part time during his studies. Over the years, the Hilton promoted him from bus boy to waiter to captain in the room service's department. After graduation, he moved to Assistant Manger and then became Food and Beverage Controller. But his schooling had prepared him for more so Rakesh moved into the Purchasing Department first as the Assistant Director and in early 1982, became the Director of Purchasing. He never looked back. His expertise in Purchasing took him from the Hilton to the Sands, and finally to the challenge of Vegas World. His corporate career ended with Affinity Gaming. In 2014, he and his son started their company, Hospitality Procurement and Design. Now, they help others redesign spaces, build gaming areas from scratch, or learn new operational systems both hands on and electronically.
