Remembering 1 October Oral History Project |
On 1 October 2017, gifted photographer, David Baker was on a three-day assignment at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival across from the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. With an understanding that the popping sounds were produced by malfunctioning equipment, David took photos of the scattering crowd. Moments later, in a now silent venue, he began to process his photographs and learned the real story. He had captured the horror of a massacre. David Becker is a lovely, humble man who is passionate about his chosen career. It is not work. It is an honor for him to capture the world through thoughtful imagery. His passion and his work ethic allowed him to be at the wrong place at the right time to show the world the work of an enraged, severely troubled human being. We are now a witness to the possibilities of acts beyond our comprehension. David describes himself as not good at sports or academics. That may be true but he speaks and teaches volumes with his camera. Beginning at the media tent on the east side of the main stage, David photographed people leaving the venue as they performed acts of heroism, helping the fallen or the slow to reach safety. Not knowing the real reason for the panic, David showed us our true giving nature in the midst of chaos. He was in the right place to capture the character of the American spirit. From the Blake Shelton song, Country Strong, David is "Blue collar in his blood, backwoods in his bones / No doubt about it that boy's country strong." For showing us who we are, good and evil, healed and hurting, David Becker earned the highest award in the field of photography, The World Press Photo Award. In the world of photography, that award is considered more prestigious than the Pulitzer. David is deserving of this honor for these Route 91 photos and for his life's work. "When I stop and think, it’s hard to comprehend what I witnessed. I was on autopilot, just doing my job capturing what was happening, which I think is important. Impactful images like these tell a story, they move people to think twice about doing anything like this. I’ve been doing this work for many years and it is instinct to photograph first and ask questions later. It probably seems irrational to just walk out and take pictures of people running for cover, but that is second nature for a photojournalist.” Subjects: World Press Photo, National Press Photographers Association, California State University Long Beach, journalism, photojournalism, gettyimages, CSN |

Both discuss their childhoods in Southern California, where Kathy's father was a landscape architect who among other projects designed the grounds of the El Rancho Hotel in Las Vegas. Ernie's father and grandfather were developers in Southern California; his father began buying land in Las Vegas as early as 1947 and building shopping centers in the early 1950s, often partnering with other home builders. Ernie IV and Kathy moved to Las Vegas in 1963, where they built their business. Ernie IV was president of Southern Nevada Home Builders Association (SNHBA) the same year his father was president of National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). |

Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project |
Tami Belt grew up in Las Vegas playing on the Municipal Golf Course where her father taught city leaders and entertainers how to hone their golf game. He worked as a PGA teaching pro. She learned the game as well along with life's lessons that can be gleaned from the "gentleman's game." She remembers shopping downtown on Fremont Street in stores like Ronzoni's Department Store that featured an escalator, probably the first in the town. Her grandfather was a city pioneer in the air conditioning and sheet metal business. As an adult, Belt's interests have been in the Public Relations field helping non-profits with campaigns related to childhood cancer and the homeless. |
