Virus Mitigation Steps

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Libraries have taken steps to mitigate coronavirus transmission risks for staff and users. These temporary measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 are outlined below.

Face masks

UNLV requires wearing facial coverings while on campus, and are required to be worn while inside the Libraries. Disposable masks will be provided for students that forget to bring one.

Reduced hours

Lied Library will be open reduced to hours to encourage students to pick up materials, checkout a laptop, use computers, print documents, and work with anatomical models for short periods of time.

Only for UNLV

Library facilities will be open only for UNLV/NSHE students, faculty, and staff. This allows the Libraries to monitor building usage to reduce the number of students in the building as well as provide priority access to students for limited computers and study spaces. Members of the community may make appointments to use Special Collections & Archives and some case by case exceptions may be made for specific research needs that cannot be met by the public libraries.

Service points

Acrylic barriers have been installed at all service points as an added safety precaution to masks to reduce transmission. Pamphlets and other materials have been removed from service points as well to facilitate frequent cleaning.

Computer terminals

Lied Library has disabled some computer terminals to provide space for social distancing. Check the computer availability map in Lied Library.

Reduced seating

The number of seats have been reduced to encourage students to spread out within the Libraries.  In addition, soft furnishings have been removed as they are difficult to sanitize.

Hand sanitizer

Hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed at entrances and by elevators. All campus employees have also been provided with hand sanitizer. In addition, many library employees will be wearing gloves in handling materials.

Increased cleaning

Increased cleaning protocols have been instituted for library materials and service points in conjunction with University Facilities. In addition, HVAC filters have been upgraded and more fresh air is being drawn into university buildings to reduce aerosol transmission.

Returning materials

Books, materials, laptops, and other items returned to the Libraries are quarantined for 7 days before being made available for checkout.
