Women Composers

By Cheryl Taranto on March 18, 2010 10:51 AM | Permalink
Looking for new music by women composers to study or perform?  Need that piece of biographical information about a forgotten woman composer?   Then the encyclopedia Women Composers, edited by Sylvia Glickman and Martha Furman Schleifer may be a great starting place for you.    As a part of the Classical Music Reference Library and available full text online to UNLV affiliated patrons,  Women Composers contains biographical information, analyses of works, comments on performance practice and a modern edition of the works of prominent women composers through history.  Translations are given for vocal works, and many of the works contained in these volumes cannot be found elsewhere.   This is a great resource for both biographical information about and music by women composers!

Also note that the Classical Music Reference Library contains other helpful reference works full text online such as Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians and Donald Grout's A Short History of Opera.
