Construction Slated to Begin in Lied Library

In September, Lied Library begins a renovation to create exciting new spaces for UNLV students, faculty, and staff. In support of UNLV’s Top Tier goals, the University Libraries are committed to engaging our community at every stage of the research and creative process by extending our spaces and services to support the creation of new knowledge. These new, multidisciplinary spaces include a makerspace, three audio production studios, and a video production studio. Each space is designed to support the different, daring, and diverse needs of the UNLV community in the following ways:

Makerspace: This dynamic and experimental space will facilitate active learning, prototyping, tinkering, and community-driven or self-directed projects. Upon opening we will offer access to 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, and sewing, and expand technologies and services based on need.

Audio Recording: Three different studios will support recording for podcasts, interviews, and music performances. Each room is outfitted with professional-grade equipment and software for various recording needs.

Video recording: This studio provides an all-in-one space for recording performances, presentations, interviews, and much more. This studio is designed to facilitate simple recording as well as more complex efforts using green screen technology.

With these new spaces, we encourage students, faculty, and staff to explore and extend their research, course work, and creativity in new and innovative ways. University Libraries staff will provide group and individual instruction for course-based assignments, research projects, and creative activity for any experience level and all disciplines. Overall, this will increase student support spaces and support student learning and research.

Construction will begin on the west side of the first floor of Lied Library in early September and continue throughout the Fall 2018 semester. Every effort will be made to minimize disruption to library users and operations during this time.  For users who require quiet study space, the third and fourth floors offer quiet areas for solitary study.  Foam ear plugs are available free of charge at any Lied Library service desk.  Project updates will be provided via the University Libraries website.
