Graphic Medicine Titles
The UNLV Health Sciences Library is one of the first medical libraries west of the Mississippi to have a dedicated online and physical collection of graphic novels that tell patient pathologies, physician perspectives, and caretaker stories. The current set of approximately 60 physical titles are located in the Medical School InfoCommons and are available on reserve for one week loan. Titles cover topics such as:
- Autism & Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Aging & End of Life
- Veteran Health & Life
- LGBTQ+ Health, including HIV/AIDS
- Adolescence and Childhood
- Women’s Health, Fertility & Domestic Violence
- Human Trafficking
Graphic medicine is the use of comics and graphic novels to tell health- and healthcare-related
stories. The use of pictures in combination with narrative allows readers to not only learn facts,
but also realize the importance of place, time, and feelings in a character’s overall experience of
health and wellness. Reading and creating graphic medicine can promote reflective practice,
build empathy, bridge communication gaps between physicians and patients, promote health
literacy, and provide a voice to marginalized communities to comment on social and systematic
issues in health and healthcare.
To browse available titles in print and online, please view our Graphic Medicine Guide. To request to borrow a title without access to the SoM InfoCommons, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be happy to assist you.

Studies have shown that individuals who take time to read, particularly stories involving shared
human struggles, increase their capacity for empathy, critical reasoning and creative thought.

from day-to-day stress, and our curated selection of health humanities titles provides a look into
interesting and difficult social, ethical, and medical issues. Readers can find titles in our
