This temporary student assistant position is scheduled between 10 and 20 hours per week. Scheduled shifts are dependent on the student assistant’s availability and the operational priorities and needs of the division and/or department.

Purpose of the position

Student Makerspace Consultants serve as ambassadors and instructors of the new University Libraries Makerspace. This dynamic and experimental space will focus on tinkering, prototyping, making, and fostering community-driven learning experiences through specialized technology and expert assistance. The purpose of this position is to provide operational and instructional support for Makerspace equipment and software including 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, sewing, and other electronics. This space will open in the summer of 2019.  We anticipate training to begin in late May or early June.

Duties & responsibilities

● Assist users with tools and equipment
● Assist with Makerspace orientations
● Create and maintain learning guides and support materials
● Monitor and maintain making supplies and tools
● Enforce safety guidelines for users
● Perform light equipment maintenance and cleaning, such as sweeping and dusting 
● Develop and maintain consistent policies and workflows for services
● Record statistics and update user records with appropriate information
● Complete special projects as assigned

●  Physically lifting and moving materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
●  Pushing carts with materials weighing up to 50 pounds
●  Working with digital fabrication equipment, hand tools, and electronics

Qualifications

Required:
● Contribute professionally and respectfully to a diverse and inclusive work environment
● Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions
● Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
● Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
● Must be self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision

Preferred:
● Interest in design, engineering, making, or crafting
● Customer service experience
● Previous library, makerspace, or digital fabrication experience
