This temporary student assistant position is scheduled between 10 and 19 hours per week.  Scheduled shifts are dependent on student assistant’s availability and the operational priorities and needs of the division and/or department.

Purpose of the position

The main focus of the Scholarly Communication and Data Services department is to capture, preserve, and share the scholarly research materials produced by UNLV faculty, staff, and students. These materials can include articles, monographs, audio/visual presentations, working papers, technical reports, conference papers/posters, theses/dissertations, data sets, and publicly-funded research. We host these works in our institutional repository, Digital Scholarship@UNLV.

Our student assistants provide accurate and efficient data entry into a variety of document and program types in Windows and Google environments to ensure discoverability of scholarly research materials hosted in Digital Scholarship@UNLV and support the work of the department.

Duties & responsibilities
  • Learn new concepts, terms, and software programs related to current industry standards
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Provide metadata entry and data clean-up
  • Organize digital files based on written and verbal instructions and workflows
  • Perform effective keyword and title searches in search engines and library databases
  • Navigate multiple window tabs to transfer data via copy/paste method
  • Upload & download digital files
  • Work effectively in Windows and Google environments such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Gmail
  • Assist with miscellaneous projects as needed 


Working conditions
  • Working independently at a computer for 90% of the shift.
  • Rarely, may need to physically lift and move materials weighing up to 50 lbs., maneuver book trucks weighing up to 100 lbs.

  • Experience with Excel and Google Sheets preferred
  • Experience working in a library or clerical environment preferred
