Ask a student worker or librarian for the most interesting item in the Music Library, and any one of them is apt to pull out a facsimile of a 14th century manuscript. The “Squarcialupi Codex” is an assortment of handwritten pieces by Italian composers with gold leafed edges and full-color artwork at the beginning of each section. It is completely handwritten due to the fact the printing press hadn’t been invented yet.
Businesses in Las Vegas need every opportunity to stay open, be profitable and grow, and more times than not, owners reach a point where their needs outweigh their resources—the catch 22 of the business world. Owners of small- and medium-sized businesses need to tap into data that can help them increase their market share, research their core demographic or categorize the spending habits of customers in their industry, but most can’t afford the expensive subscriptions needed to view the databases that contain this information.
The UNLV Libraries provides a solution. They make these databases available to business owners to use for free, and many don’t realize this resource is available to them.
Databases containing information about market research, industry and market trends, locations of growing markets, information on competitors and customers and demographics are all available at UNLV Libraries, says Business Librarian Patrick Griffis. “Our resources are very specific in this area,” Griffis explains. “They are targeted to specific research information for a specific task.”
While working as student assistants in the Curriculum Materials Library, Heather Johnson and Janie Ralston (L-R) discovered a new professional calling and are now pursuing a career in libraries.
Libraries are usually thought of as quiet places, where students can study and faculty can conduct research. On the other hand, the Curriculum Materials Library (CML), which serves the College of Education, functions at a slightly higher decibel level and bustles with more activity than an average library. On a typical day at the CML, librarians help teachers in training, faculty or professional educators research materials, study groups meet to go over lesson plans, students prepare projects in the Teacher Prep Room and student workers collaborate to develop creative book displays. And this could all happen before noon.
“We’re not a quiet library,” says Amy Johnson, outgoing head of the CML, with a laugh. “Teacher education is largely collaborative.”
A self-confessed enthusiast of live theater, dance, and musical performances, Anne Zald once made a 12-hour, round trip drive just to see a play. Every family has its share of notorious stories that become folklore, and for Zald’s family this experience made the cut. “We saw a great production, which I loved,” she reminisces. “But now every decision to go to an event is accompanied by jokes such as, ‘Well, if it only takes an hour to get there, how good could it be?’”
Anne’s determined spirit is also evident in her service to UNLV students and faculty. She is head of Educational Initiatives at University Libraries. Efforts to embed information literacy across the curriculum are her primary responsibility. One such initiative is her involvement with the Faculty Institutes, which helps professors to design their courses and assignments in ways that implement active learning practices that improve learning outcomes.
Kelly Robertson, UNLV Libraries Classified
Employee of the Year
Libraries are proud to recognize Kelly Robertson as UNLV Libraries Classified Employee of the Year. Robertson, who works in the Bibliographic and Metadata Services department, was chosen for her dedication to the Libraries and to advancing its goals. She has also demonstrated exceptional creativity in developing new services and ideas. Kelly is described by her peers as friendly, helpful and enthusiastic.
Robertson learned she was chosen at the UNLV Libraries annual employee recognition reception in June. “I was very surprised when I heard my name called at the awards ceremony,” she says. “I believe I’m only the second person in our division to be selected for this honor.”
