Lied Library is at the heart of UNLV. The impressive 302,000-square-foot, five-story building is a landmark on the university campus. It is the main branch of the UNLV University Libraries system, which also includes the Music Library, Architecture Library and Curriculum Materials Library, as well as two virtual libraries (Shadow Lane and Singapore Campus). But beyond being an award-winning, state-of-the art building, Lied Library is at the center of student learning. With approximately 8,000 visitors per day, Lied Library is a campus hub—second only to the Student Union. This fall semester, Lied Library has seen even greater activity, including the renovation of spaces that further enhance the library experience.

Most people think of an architect as a person who designs buildings. But, in reality, an architect can more accurately be described as someone who invents spaces where human beings can live better. Beyond designing the interior and exterior of a building, an architect is concerned with how our home, work and leisure environments enhance our overall quality of life. For students of the UNLV School of Architecture, mastering this discipline requires the understanding of human behavior, art, history, physics and engineering.

Nestled in the Lee and Thomas Beam Music Center building is the Music Library, where Mozart, Beethoven and music scores meet CDs, digitized pieces and online connectivity.

The Music Library houses several collections, including the Classical Scores Library, containing 24,000 digitized music scores for UNLV faculty, staff and students; the Petrucci Music Library, a free electronic resource with access to printed scores in the public domain and Special Collections, which includes historical sets. This is apart from the thousands of CDs, videos and books on music also housed at the library.

Hello and welcome to the inaugural issue of the UNLV Libraries’ e-Connections e-newsletter. You may be familiar with the printed newsletter, Connections, which we stopped publishing in order to support university-wide budget initiatives. Yet, as our work to serve UNLV students and the community continues, we looked for creative ways to share the good news that is happening throughout all four branches of UNLV Libraries. An electronic newsletter is an excellent vehicle for staying in regular contact with our students, faculty and the community at large—for keeping you informed about new initiatives, services and new collections that may be of interest to you.
