After a hectic year of transitions, the University Libraries were glad to welcome 2018 with an ambitious suite of services and programs supporting the UNLV community. During my first six months at UNLV, I have had the pleasure of meeting many students, faculty, and community supporters who are partners with library faculty and staff in meeting the education and research goals of the University Libraries. My orientation to UNLV will continue through this academic year and my initial impressions have been of a library system that is deeply connected to academic and lifelong success of our students. Through our robust instruction and liaison program, library faculty are engaged in the classroom and throughout campus working with students on critical thinking skills that support locating, evaluating, and applying information to their coursework and research projects. Our digital and scholarly collections provide ways to open access to UNLV research and unique resources. Our library facilities are extensions of the classroom where learning continues with expert librarians and staff and spaces are provided for individual and collaborative learning.

During this academic year, a number of improvements are underway including implementation of a new library services platform integrating our catalog with online journals and books to facilitate discovery and delivery of information to the desktop. Upgraded LASR storage software and equipment to facilitate access to materials stored in the Lied Library seldom used materials collection will follow. Construction is underway to expand the operations in Lied Library to include virtual reality, audio, and video production as well as 3D printers, large scale printing, and data visualization services. The Knowledge Production Lab will be fully operational at the end of 2018. All of these activities - both virtual and onsite demonstrate a commitment to student instruction that contributes to retention, progression, and completion.

We are having fun celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our Special Collections and Archives. I hope you are able to join us for one of the many events that highlight our collections, including online resources that document the history of the University, gaming, and Southern Nevada.

Thank you to many who have provided me with a warm welcome to UNLV and I hope to meet more of you as we support the University's strategic plan to develop Top Tier initiatives including a top tier research library. All the best for the remainder of the academic year!
