Between the Lines, News from YOUR Research Library: Achieve

By BTL on September 3, 2015 6:07 PM | Permalink

Welcome to Between the Lines, an e-newsletter created specifically with UNLV staff, faculty, administrators, and graduate students in mind. As the fall semester gets underway, we welcome you to discover key resources, services, and library faculty available to contribute to your research and teaching.

In this issue, themed ACHIEVE, we share information about our collections budget and how we continuously work to meet your teaching and research needs. In addition to managing collection costs, we participate in regional and national groups to provide access to deep and rich collections. For example, University Libraries are now a member of HathiTrust, a collaborative repository of digital content from major research institutions and libraries.

Sustainability of Library Budgets & Collections

By BTL on September 3, 2015 6:01 PM | Permalink

UNLV University Libraries’ collections budget funds the purchase and subscriptions of resources in all formats to support the teaching and research needs of the university. Every year a larger percentage of this budget is devoted to journal and database subscriptions, which are subject to annual inflationary increases. In FY13/14, 88% of the Libraries’ collection funds were spent on these continuing resources, while 8% was allocated to monographs and other resources. Data collected by the Association of Research Libraries clearly illustrate this trend of an increasing percentage of overall collections budgets allocated to journal and database subscriptions.

UNLV University Libraries Join HathiTrust

UNLV University Libraries recently joined HathiTrust, a partnership of research institutions committed to preserving and providing access to digitized monographs and other materials via a shared repository.

Nearly 100 HathiTrust partners bring an excess of 13 million volumes of copyrighted and public domain materials to lifelong learners worldwide. More than five centuries and 400 languages represented in the HathiTrust repository will now be available to the UNLV community through the Libraries' web portal.

Research Guides Connect Students to Library Resources

By BTL on September 3, 2015 3:21 PM | Permalink

UNLV University Libraries’ subject guides are a one-stop entry into library resources, instructing your students how to find and use pertinent resources in specific disciplines. Guides are convenient for students who don’t have time for in-person assistance, but who need help getting started with their research projects. They also are helpful for online education students and those who have a hard time getting to campus. Guides include content in a wide variety of formats, from web links to traditional resources to YouTube videos, representing the diverse learning styles of your students.

Subject guides are now integrated into WebCampus, enabling your students to access relevant, subject-specific resources directly from your course’s WebCampus pages!

Libraries Partner with Faculty to Integrate Real-Life Learning with Research

By BTL on September 3, 2015 2:46 PM | Permalink

In an effort to document their culminating experience, many UNLV seniors are including experiential learning as part of their journey to graduation. The culminating experience is the final course in the UNLV general education curriculum that serves to demonstrate and assess student achievement of the University Undergraduate Learning Outcomes, as well as those of the major. Students benefit from hands-on learning experiences throughout the community. Education students develop skills in elementary and secondary school classrooms, criminal justice students ride along with local police officers, and students from various departments complete specialized internships. Many of these real-life learning experiences are also informed by a research and reflection component: students investigate best practices and recent research in the literature of their field and reflect upon and use that information in their own practice. This blend of practice and reflective research is great preparation for post-college life.

UNLV Students Explore and Document Our Region’s African American History

In collaboration with the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Research Center (OHRC), several UNLV undergraduate students in two Afro-American Studies courses conducted oral histories with black Las Vegas residents. Dr. Manoucheka Celeste and Dr. Julia Lee contacted Claytee White, director of the OHRC, to bring black history to life, after discovering the wealth of primary source materials available in the Documenting the African American Experience in Las Vegas Digital Collection.

Melissa Bowles-Terry is the co-author of Classroom Assessment Techniques for Librarians, which was published in July. Bowles-Terry and Cassandra Kvenild (University of Wyoming) share 24 tried-and-true assessment tools to help librarians assess students’ ability to recall, analyze, and apply new knowledge.

John Novak and Richard Zwiercan’s article, “Reorganizing through Lean Principles,” was published in the April 2015 issue of Strategic Library.

Greg Volker and Heather Johnson’s article “LASR Pointers: Assessing the need for, creating, and measuring standardized training for an automated storage and retrieval system,” was published in the July 2015 issue of Strategic Library.
