The Future of Reserves

Beginning with the spring 2015 semester, electronic course reserves will be available exclusively within WebCampus.

There are many benefits to this approach:

  • Simplified Course Materials Access for Students: Students will be able to access all their course readings, assignments and documents in one place.
  • Better Tracking & Metrics: Instructors are able to track whether individual students are accessing and using the files provided in WebCampus at the article or document level. This is not possible in the current e-reserves environment.
  • Streamlined Campus Services & Security: The solution eliminates duplication of services and allows students to use their ACE account instead of learning new passwords.
  • Improved Copyright & Fair Use Compliance: The level of security the new system provides is also more in line with current interpretations of copyright law for restricting access than the current electronic reserves system.
  • Option for Complete Document Management by Instructors: Instructors who choose to bypass the Libraries and post directly into their courses can retain full control over their course document management in the WebCampus environment.

The University Libraries collaborated with colleagues in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to develop this campus-wide solution to online access to supplemental readings and other course materials.

This one-system solution offers instructors two levels of control and participation. “In each option, the Libraries can help provide streamlined access to materials we own or subscribe to, whether instructors prefer to manage those materials directly or the Libraries manage them for instructors via the specialized WebCampus module,” said Jennifer Church, head of user services.

This summer, the Libraries began a pilot project to integrate traditional library electronic reserves into a new module within WebCampus. The pilot continues during the fall 2014 semester as we assist instructors in transitioning to the WebCampus solution.

During the pilot, Christina Martinez, an instructor in the English Department, worked with library staff to have her former e-reserves reading list converted to WebCampus. Martinez elected to have the library manage her course materials and found her students were pleased with the change. “The new e-reserves access is efficient and convenient. It’s easy access for students, having everything related to the course on one platform. When I introduced it to my class, they sighed in relief and said ‘how easy’. We’re all happy now,” said Martinez.

The Libraries will continue to provide physical course reserve services for faculty and instructors. Lied Library and our branch libraries each have a reserves coordinator available to guide you through the transition to WebCampus course reserves or with your physical reserve request(s).
