Since the unveiling of the new Graduate Commons in Lied Library in September 2012, project planning resulting from our 2010 Space Needs Master Plan has shifted to concentrate on upgrading and enhancing the public spaces in Lied Library.
During the upcoming extended winter closure of Lied Library, the first floor will be resurfaced to ensure the safety of UNLV students and community visitors. This project is a key component of the Lied Public Space Enhancement Project, which was initiated to address the wear and tear of Lied Library, now in its 13th year of service, as well as the reconfiguration of spaces to meet the demands of a growing student body and its evolving needs for new and emerging information technology.
Many sources of information have informed decisions regarding enhancement projects. Feedback and data have been collected in a variety of ways, ranging from routinely collected data (e.g., computer use statistics) to feedback from library users. User input was collected through surveys, focus groups, observation, and informal comments solicited in public spaces. All of the decisions made for our space enhancement efforts were informed by user input and collected data.
The effort and commitment of the Libraries to integrate the input of our users into planning has been well-received. Adrian Viesca, a current library user and UNLV alumnus said, “I’m very pleased with the transparency and the plans put forth to continue to make sure Lied Library meets the needs of students. All the projects are surprisingly well thought-out and I think represent both ambition of what a library should be and the direct needs of the users who use it day in and day out.”
When Lied Library re-opens in January 2014, in addition to the completion of the resurfacing of our first floor, these additional projects will be well underway:
Group Study Spaces
New group study spaces are being added throughout the building, and some other spaces are being converted to better fit the needs of groups. Group study zones are being developed on the first and second floors; some will have technology, and all will have furniture that is flexible enough for group use. We are repurposing former copy rooms and book sorting areas on floors 2-5 and converting them into group study rooms. Group study alcoves with glass marker boards have recently been created on floors 2-5 and new furniture for those spaces is on order. The group study spaces will continue to evolve over the course of the spring and summer terms as different elements are introduced to these spaces—including technology enhancements to assist with academic coursework.
A recurring request from users is the enhancement and addition of flexible group study spaces.
Research Consultation Room
Slated to debut in February 2014, the new Research Consultation Room will provide an important space for in-depth research assistance. This space will allow users to work on research projects one-on-one with library faculty who have subject-specific expertise. The Research Consultation Room, which is currently being used as a staff conference room, will be located adjacent to the Circulation Desk.
New and Updated Signage
As out-of-date, incorrect, and/or difficult-to-read signage is removed, new signage will begin to be installed throughout the building. New signage will include a new digital display system with interactive kiosks on every floor, to provide self-service facility and directional information. Infrastructure work will begin to prepare for the installation of the new digital display system, and existing signage will be removed.
Updating Existing Furnishings
The plush lounge furniture and computer task chairs will be reupholstered with new fabric that is both durable and easy to clean. View the visible wear and tear of this furniture in our “before photos.”
