Head of Architecture Studies Library Wins Prestigious Award

Architecture Library head Caroline Smith’s recent book, Lifelong Learning for Engineers and Scientists in the Information Age, helps engineering educators, advisors, and supervisors of engineering interns create stronger team projects and training workshops. She and her co-authors have been awarded the 2013 Best Publication Award by a division of the American Society of Engineering for their contributions designing learning experiences that work for engineers with any level of experience.

“I am very proud of this accomplishment. It is yet another honor that reflects positively on the academic activity of UNLV Libraries,” stated Jennifer Fabbi, Associate Dean of UNLV Libraries, upon learning of this recognition of Smith’s work. Co-authors of the monograph include Ashok Naimpally of Fresno City College and Hema Ramachandran of California State University-Long Beach; Elsevier published the text.

The Engineering Library Division of the American Society for Engineering Award Committee bestows this highly competitive award to the best book published in 2012. Alice Trussell, award committee chair, professor and director of the Fiedler Engineering Library at Kansas State University, shared that evaluators appreciated this publication’s “juxtaposition [of] the goals and realities of engineering education and of teaching information literacy, marking points of logical intersection,” its attention to “Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) criteria and Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) information literacy standards,” its thorough list of references, and inclusion of “talking points for librarians” to use with “faculty and practicing engineers.” This text promotes information literacy by identifying areas in which “definitions of lifelong learning and selected competencies” between ABET and ACRL “are in concert.”

“I thought I had to wait until June to hear, so it was a surprise for me to get the news,” Caroline asserted. “Plus, we had some very healthy competition, so this is an even sweeter acknowledgement.”

The society will present the award at the Annual Meeting of the Engineering Libraries Division to be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Along with this prestigious honor, the American Society for Testing and Materials has donated stipends of $1000.00 to each of the winning authors.
