Welcome to Las Vegas!

After more than a few years in the idea phase, and two years in the planning stage, the long-awaited super regional meeting of the Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists, Northwest Archivists, Society of California Archivists, and Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists is finally a reality. On behalf of the Local Arrangements Committee, I would like to welcome you all to Las Vegas and the Western Round-Up!

In addition to the rich and interesting pre-conference workshops and sessions planned for the program, we are featuring three tours, each of which will provide a unique glimpse into the history of the city that historian Hal Rothman has famously called "the first city of the twenty-first century." Go deep into the barren Nevada desert just outside, but a world away from the glitter of Las Vegas for a day-long tour of the Nevada Test Site that will take you back to the era of atomic testing, or explore the other side of the bright lights of Las Vegas by touring the Neon Boneyard, resting place of the city's legendary neon signs. For the entertainment-minded, there is a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the long-running Jubilee production show at Bally's Hotel, led by a real Las Vegas showgirl.

There will also be an opportunity to explore local historical repositories such as the Liberace Museum, Clark County Heritage Museum, Boulder City Museum, and UNLV Special Collections, that showcase the diversity of southern Nevada history.

Our conference hotel, the Alexis Resort & Villas, is centrally-located near much of the best that Las Vegas has to offer. For those of you with a yearning to be a rock-n-roll archivist, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino offers a treasure trove of memorabilia just across the street from the hotel. If you want to explore further afield, the Strip is just a mile away, offering visitors the opportunity to visit the dazzling hotel/casinos that have made Las Vegas famous. After all, there's only one place in the world where it's possible to visit Venice, Paris, New York and Egypt in one day!

We're looking forward to meeting you all - until then "Viva Las Vegas!"
