7:00 am - 4:00 pm Tour ~ Nevada Test Site
The Department of Energy (DOE), and its predecessor agencies, the Energy Research and Development Administration and the Atomic Energy Commission, conducted nuclear tests and other experiments at the Nevada Test Site. This tour will provide you with the opportunity to see artifacts and archaeological sites from the early settlers, relics remaining from nuclear weapons tests, nuclear rocket experiments, and a variety of other defense, environmental, and energy-related programs.Security Requirements - PLEASE READ
Because the Test Site is a restricted access government reservation, visitors must apply well in advance for tours tailored to their individual interests and needs. Prospective visitors MUST supply the following background information:
- Full name as it appears on driver's license or other photo identification
- Social Security Number
- Date and place of birth
- Home and business address, to include name of employer
- Home and business phone number
- Citizenship (foreign citizens will be asked to supply additional information)

Subjects to be covered include:
1. The historic and cultural importance of non-feature film.
2. Circumstances under which an institution might find itself with a film collection.
3. The issues inherent in setting up a film preservation program.
4. The basics of film preservation.
5. Accessing images.
6. Fundraising ideas.
7. Acquisition challenges.
8. Getting the word out!
9. Resources for setting up a film preservation program.

Fee: $55 Western Region Members* (CIMA, NWA, SCA, and SRMA only) $75 Non-MembersToby Murray, CIMA's Immediate Past President and internationally acclaimed Disaster Queen, will conduct a hands-on workshop on the salvage of water-damaged materials, including books, documents, photographs, microforms, and other stuff found in archives, libraries, museums, and historical societies. This workshop is a follow-up of the pre-conference workshop on "Disaster Planning for Dummies" that she conducted at the 2004 annual CIMA meeting. Participants should have basic knowledge of disaster preparedness and planning, and a written disaster plan for their institution. The workshop will be held in the UNLV Libraries' Preservation/Conservation Laboratory, and participants should wear grubbies and expect to muck about in wet, sloppy materials.

1:30 pm - 3:30 pm Tour ~ Neon Boneyard ~ Take a rare look at the Neon Boneyard, final resting place for Las Vegas' defunct neon signs. The Boneyard is a three-acre site in downtown Las Vegas and is frequently used for movie and video shoots -- those who watch CSI: Las Vegas are probably familiar with it. A guide from the Las Vegas Neon Museum will provide a fascinating look at this unique piece of Vegas history. Transportation provided. Wear comfy shoes.

Explore some of the unique cultural heritage repositories of Southern Nevada on your own. The opening reception will be held at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. Investigate the nearby UNLV Arboretum Xeric Garden (located at the entrance to the museum) to observe how drought-tolerant plants and a water efficient irrigation system may be allied to conserve water, yet create an attractive landscape. The one and one-half acre garden features numerous plants introduced from Australia, South America, Mexico and the Mediterranean. A large variety of plants indigenous to the four desert regions of North America are also displayed. The opening reception is supported by a generous donation from Metal Edge.
