Collection is comprised of the working manuscript of Don Ashbaugh's
book, Nevada's
Turbulent Yesterday: A Study in Ghost Towns. The collection also
contains typescript drafts, newspaper clippings and a small amount
of correspondence. Ashbaugh, columnist and editor at the Las Vegas
Review Journal in the 1950s, wrote a weekly column entitled "Ghost
Towns of Nevada" for many years.

Atharasoglov, Micheal

Collection contains the records of Las Vegas taxicab activist
Micheal Atharasoglov. He fought to unionize the taxicab drivers
and to restructure the Nevada Taxi Cab Driver's Administration
Authority Charter. There is correspondence between Atharasoglov
and Governor Richard Bryan and Attorney General Mahlon Brown regarding
the poor treatment of drivers by the cab companies and a push
for help from the Nevada State Legislature. There are several
newspaper articles about Atharasoglov's struggle.

Baker, C. D.

Collection consists of papers relating to the life and activities
of civil engineer C.D. Baker, who served as chief engineer, county
surveyor and two-term mayor of Las Vegas in the 1950s. Baker also
served as a Nevada State senator and assemblyman, and ran an unsuccessful
campaign for Nevada governor. Collection contains mayoral correspondence,
campaign ephemera, scrapbooks, award certificates, and news clippings
relating primarily to his career in politics. The collection also
contains correspondence and newsletters focusing on the Las Vegas
Rotary Club in the 1920s, including the "The Boulder Dam"
newsletter.

Collection encompasses the complete history of BMI (Basic Magnesium
Inc.): growth records of the company, size and production of plants
to include material output per plant with costs of production,
newspaper articles about mining in general and BMI specifically.
Boxes 5 through 8 contain photographs of plant sites (locations
throughout Gabbs and Henderson, NV) at various stages of construction.

Boyle Field Engineering
Collection of C.D. Baker

Collection is comprised of the field notebooks of Charles Duncan
(CD) Baker, City Engineer and
County Surveyor, responsible for planning and supervising most
downtown Las Vegas street
construction prior to WWII. Baker later served as Las Vegas mayor
and Nevada assemblyman and senator. The field notebooks contain
survey coordinates and elevation data for much of early Las Vegas.
The notebooks provide important information on early property
boundaries, historical elevations and lengths of existing streets

Collection contains the papers of Elmo C. Bruner, reflecting on
his time in Las Vegas as an architect, appraiser, and member of
the Nevada State Board of Architects. He was responsible for the
designs of many local buildings, including McCarran Air Terminal,
a number of churches, school buildings, and residences. This collection
contains building specifications, projects, and correspondence.

Collection consists of the real estate records of Gilbert Buck:
records on individual properties from mortgage agreements and
records of rent payments to general repairs and appliance brochures.
Also included are newspaper articles about the Governor's Race,

specific lands by the State Parks, Nevada's available water resources,
soil surveys, maps and photographs of land. (Real estate was located

Collection consists of news articles, photo albums and family
scrapbooks documenting Spencer and Georgia Butterfield's involvement
in Las Vegas business and civic activities. Georgia Butterfield
worked for the Office of Indian Affairs in the 1930s and was
a member of the Rotary Club, and Spencer Butterfield was the President
of the Bank of Nevada. This collection also holds their personal
and business correspondence and eulogies for Spencer Butterfield.

Byrne, Grace Winkleman

Collection consists of four typewritten essays, a manuscript about
Utah entitled "History of
Grazing," and a photo of Grace W. Byrne. A note with this
collection indicates that Grace Winkleman Byrne wrote for the
Las Vegas Sun, Las Vegas Review Journal, and the Henderson Pages,
and that she founded the Henderson Chamber of Commerce.

of Al Cahlan's "Where I Sit"
newspaper column that he wrote for the Las Vegas Review Journal

Vegas Review Journal for many years and active in the Nevada Democratic
Party. He was also active in Las Vegas civic and community affairs.

(Jones) Cahlan worked as a reporter for the Review Journal, and

articles and manuscripts, and drafts and notes for their book
Water -- A History of Las Vegas. Subjects include Nellis AFB,
Nevada American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, Las Vegas
Jubilee, high-speed ground transportation, Service League/Junior

Collection consists of typescript photocopies of the "Autobiography
of Anson Call" and "Sketch - Life of Anson Call 1810-1890
Pioneer in the Building of the West." Also, a typescript
transcription of Call's report, "Exploration of the Colorado,
1864," and two typescript transcriptions of Call's correspondence
in 1865. The two papers on Call appear to be incomplete.

Collection is comprised of the senatorial papers of U.S. Senator
(from Nevada) Howard Cannon from 1959 to 1982. Cannon strongly
supported the Great Society programs and the War on Poverty. As
a decorated WWII pilot, he was particularly interested in aviation
issues. Collection materials include correspondence, speeches,
invitations, press releases, appointment books, audio, video,
and film. There are specific files on Las Vegas and an index file.

Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization that
worked to improve living conditions in West Las Vegas by providing
a variety of community development services. The organization
began in May 1972, in the wake of a welfare protest march orchestrated
by the Clark County Welfare Rights Organization and Ruby Duncan.
Operation Life grew from this organization and was directed by
Ruby Duncan, as executive director from 1972 until her health
forced her to retire in 1990. In general, this collection documents
part of the history of a non-profit community development corporation.
In addition, the material provides a glimpse of the regulations
and protocol governing the public and private funding process.
The collection also provides a partial documentation of the lives

to the Colorado River Commission (he was chairman at one point
in his career) on water rights, usage and alternate water sources.
Included is a feasibility study of the mechanical system for the
Griffith Phytotronics Laboratories, labs designed for experimenting
with plant growth and development. And finally, the collection
has news clippings about the national air races from 1928, a photograph
of an early airplane, Griffith's American Legion papers, and the
death and burial records belonging to his father, an embalmer.

Collection consists of 17 letters (photocopies) between Lt. Joseph
C. Ives (United States Army
Corps of Topographic Engineers) and his wife, Cora Semmes Ives,
between Sept. 1857 and June 1858. Ives was in command of a U.S.
Army expedition whose mission was to explore the region of the
Colorado River and the Grand Canyon, and to establish the limit
of navigation of the Colorado River. The correspondence is largely
personal in nature, but is a useful supplement to the official
report documenting the voyage, Report Upon the Colorado River
of the West -- Explored in 1857-58.

Collection is comprised of the personal papers of Jeanne Russel
Janish, a Nevada artist and illustrator noted for her botanical
illustrations. Janish traveled widely in China as a young woman
and produced numerous pencil drawings and watercolors of that
country. In her later years, she focused on the American Southwest.
She was a graduate of Vassar and held a Masters degree from Stanford.
Material in this collection includes school report cards; detailed
diaries from 1918-1964, 1968, and 1973; personal correspondence;
family papers; and two original manuscripts. The collection also
contains several publications pertaining to her and her husband's
interests, craft materials, drawing tools, photocopies of dried

as the NAACP. Collection consists of clippings, photographs, correspondence,
and videos regarding civil rights and entertainment, in particular,

B. Norris. Of particular interest with reagard to Nevada are the

This collection is comprised of lottery tickets, advertisements,
prize breakdowns and drawing schedules from around the world.
There are 3 lottery tickets dated 1714 and 1715, the proceeds of
which were to finance the cutting of a canal in Connecticut; an
announcement of a lottery to be held for household goods in 18th
century England; and several other lottery tickets and drawing
schedules from 18th and 19th century United States and Europe.
There is also included in this collection an undated deck of 25
cards called the "Hands of Poker" printed in London,
England, and a letter from the Postmaster General announcing a
new law making it illegal to mail lottery information dated in
1876.

to become a public park. Collection is comprised of McWilliams
financial ledgers from 1905 listing property sales by block and
lot in the original Las Vegas townsite, expenses, and a copy of
the deed to his Goodsprings property. Other items include receipts,
correspondence photographs, maps (including those of the original
Las Vegas townsite), ads for McWilliams maps, and surveying manuals.

a realtor who spent most of his life in Los Angeles and moved
to Las Vegas late in life. A newspaper clipping in the collection
describes how Romans originally came to Las Vegas in 1894 and
stayed at the Las Vegas Rancho as a guest of Helen Stewart during
a land speculating trip. The article provides Romans' vivid recollections
of the Las Vegas landscape in the 1890s and his swim in the Las
Vegas springs. Collection consists primarily of photographs both
loose and in photo albums along with some correspondence and post
cards. The majority of the photographs are either family photos or depict the Los Angeles area; there is little
else relating to Las Vegas.

Charles "Pop" Squires (editor of the Las Vegas Age and
member of the Colorado River Commission) and his wife, Delphine,
who helped found Christ Church Episcopal and the Mesquite Club.
The Squires Papers concentrate on the Las Vegas years (1905- 1964),
although there is some material from earlier periods. The Civic
interests series contains miscellaneous items relating to early
life in Las Vegas (1905-1958). The Manuscripts series contains
book and short story manuscripts, articles, press releases and
radio scripts written by Squires and his wife. The Correspondence
series reflects the period 1910-1958 (many letters relating to
his work on the CRC including some from President Herbert Hoover)

related to family life such as report cards, certificates, Parent

Collection is comprised primarily of the correspondence of John
Bunker and Mary Etta
Syphus from 1891-1895. Mary Etta was one of ten children of Luke
and Christina Syphus, a pioneer Mormon family who settled in Panaca,
Nevada in the late 1800s. In September 1895, Mary Etta married
John Bunker, but passed away just two months later in November
1895. The earliest correspondence was written when Bunker was
living in El Dorado Canyon Nevada and Syphus in Panaca Nevada,
and the later correspondence when Bunker was in Logan Utah and
Syphus attending the BYU Academy Church Normal School in Provo
UT. There is additional correspondence between Mary Etta Syphus
and various friends along with some certificates and wedding announcements.
The collection also includes a genealogy chart and the Syphus
family history. Collection contains both originals, and typed
transcriptions of the correspondence. Subjects discussed include
the Muddy River, sicknesses, weather, neighbors, LDS church, school
and leisure activities.

Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad

The Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad Collection contains miscellaneous
correspondence, waybills, requisitions and other records relating
to the company's operation. Incorporated in 1904, the Tonopah
and Tidewater Railroad operated for 35 years, connecting Ludlow,
California (on the Santa Fe Railroad main line) with Beatty Nevada
by way of Death Valley. "Tidewater" referred to dreams
of eventually completing connections with San Diego, California.
Declining mining fortunes and waning borax operations in Death
Valley after 1927 caused the slow decline of the railroad, which

Collection consists of a typescript account of Maria Wheeler's
experiences from her childhood in England, crossing the Atlantic
to the United States, and her trek to the western US, specifically
the Las Vegas region. Significant because of its vivid description
of her time at the Mormon Fort around 1855 including the crops
planted, relations with the local Paiute Indians, construction
of the buildings etc. Her husband was one of the original Mormon
settlers called to develop the mission at Las Vegas.

history and mission of the White Cross Drugstore . The White Cross
Drug Store was founded in 1918 by Las Vegas pioneer W.E. Ferron;
its slogan was "the place to go for the brands you know."
The album contains photographs, employee training materials, news
clippings, advertisements, displays and some historical narrative
and press release material on the history and mission of the store.
There is contemporary advertising ephemera/brochures on cosmetic
products and perfumes from the early 1960s.

lab established at the Las Vegas Fort in the early 1930s.
