Gaming Markets - U.S.

To locate the most up-to-date information on gaming markets in the U.S. - by state - consult the North American Gaming Almanac (annual) or the Casino & Gaming Business Market Research Handbook (annual), both of which can be found at the reference desk in Special Collections.

Also see the Bear Stearns Gaming Industry Intelligence Report (every two weeks) which profiles a different gaming market in each issue. This is filed in the Special Collections pamphlet file under Gambling Companies: General: Bear Stearns: Intelligence Report.

Gaming Revenue of Individual States and the U.S. as a Whole

Consult the North American Gaming Almanac (annual) located at the reference desk in Special Collections. This was previously known as the Global Gaming Almanac, but as of 2000 it will only cover the North American market. Previous issues are cataloged at HD9999.G25 G46x.

Gaming Revenue in Las Vegas and Nevada

Consult the Gaming Revenue Report in Special Collections periodicals (shelved alphabetically), which has quarterly and yearly summaries, or try the Nevada Gaming Abstract (annual) in Special Collections stacks, which breaks out revenue information by district and by category of revenue but does NOT contain revenue of individual casinos.

Gaming Revenue of Individual Gaming Companies

Locate revenue of individual gaming companies by checking a company's Annual Reports filed either alphabetically by company name in the pamphlet file, or cataloged in Special Collections stacks. Ask at the Special Collections reference desk if you are unsure as to where an annual report is located.

In addition, more detailed financial information can often be found in the company's Form 10-K reports (filed with the SEC), filed alphabetically in the Special Collections pamphlet file.

The equity companies - Bear Stearns, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Raymond James, and Solomon Smith Barney - all profile individual gaming companies either annually or quarterly. These reports can be found in the Special Collections pamphlet file under: Gambling Companies: Name of Company: Financial Reports. (i.e. Gambling Companies: Bear Stearns: Financial Reports)

Gaming Revenue of Individual Casinos

Although it is difficult to determine the revenue generated by individual casino properties, a company's Form 10-K report often breaks down company revenue by property. These are filed alphabetically in the Special Collections pamphlet file.

Gaming History in Nevada

A good source of history on the early gaming industry in Nevada can be found in Robbins Cahill's oral history: Recollections of Work in State Politics, Government, Taxation, Gaming Control, Clark County Administration and the Nevada Resort Association in the Special Collections stacks.

Historical documents regarding the history of gaming's development in Nevada can also be found at the Nevada State Archives in Carson City. These documents include records of the Gaming Commission from 1959-1994 and the records of the Gaming Control Board from 1955-1992.

Gaming license information

A keyword search in the Library's online catalog using the words "gaming licenses" will provide many useful resources. Also try looking in the Special Collections pamphlet file. In addtion, Special Collections has City Hall Minute Books going back to 1911 that list gaming licenses granted. Ask for these at the reference desk.

The Tax and License Division of the Gaming Control Board in Carson City may also be able to provide additional information. Their website is located at http://gaming.state.nv.us/.

Historical statistics

These can be found in many different places. A good place to start is Historical perspective of Southern Nevada: 1970-1991 in the Special Collections stacks.

Other historical gaming revenue statistics (going back to 1955) can be found in back issues of the Nevada Gaming Abstracts, in the Nevada Gaming Commission Quarterly Reports, and in Gaming Revenue Analysis (filed alphabetically in the periodicals section). These can all be found in the Special Collections stacks.

Hotel Occupancy Trends

Consult the Bear Stearns Gaming Industry Intelligence Report in the Special Collections pamphlet file, or the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor's Authority Executive Summary that comes out monthly and is filed alphabetically in the Special Collections pamphlet file.

Individual casino profiles

Try the Casino Business Directory (annual), which lists over 630 casinos in North America with the property's correct name, address, phone and fax numbers. Each listing also includes the number of slots, games, hotel rooms, restaurants, casino and convention square footage, and number of parking spaces. Available at the Special Collections reference desk.

The Nevada Gaming Almanac (annual) in Special Collections stacks includes the same information as listed above, but focuses solely on Nevada. It also provides detailed summary pages for specific geographic locations in Nevada such as the LV Strip, Downtown Las Vegas, Reno-Sparks, and Laughlin.

Note: There is also a Colorado Gaming Almanac that provides the same type of information for Colorado, Mississippi, and a few other up and coming gaming states. Ask for this at the Special Collections reference desk.

Special Collections also has Promotional and Publicity files on most of the major Las Vegas casinos. Do a keyword search on the casino you are researching in the Libraries' online catalog.

Look in the Casino & Gaming Business Market Research Handbook (annual) located in the Special Collections stacks. There is also a copy at the Special Collections reference desk.

Consult two publications produced by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority: Marketing Bulletin (quarterly) and Marketing Plan (annual). Both of these are shelved alphabetically (under LVCVA) in Special Collections periodicals.

Consult Las Vegas Metropolitan Area Project: Studies of Selected Quality of Life Issues for essays on issues such as schools, air quality, water, city planning, and the criminal justice system. Found in Special Collections stacks.
