Abstract

The Kathryn Howell Papers on Civic Engagement in Nevada (1960-2002) contain newspaper articles, correspondence, newsletters, photographs, and personal writings of Kathryn Howell, a teacher, activist, and lobbyist in Southern Nevada. The collection also includes memorabilia from the election of President John F. Kennedy and the 1964 Nevada Centennial celebration, as well as a photograph and letter from former Nevada governor and U.S. senator, Richard H. Bryan.

Scope and Contents Note

The Kathryn Howell Papers on Civic Engagement in Nevada (1960-2002) contain newspaper articles, correspondence, newsletters, photographs, and some personal writings of Kathryn Howell, a teacher, activist, and lobbyist in Southern Nevada. The collection includes documents relating to the National Council for Senior Citizens, the Retired Public Employees of Nevada (RPEN), and the Salute to Citizenship Campaign. The collection also includes a tapestry and campaign pins pertaining to the election of President John F. Kennedy, a banner from the 1964 Nevada Centennial celebration, and a framed photograph and letter from former Nevada governor and U.S. senator, Richard H. Bryan.

Biographical / Historical Note

Kathryn Howell was born in California on September 5, 1910. She taught for twenty-one years at public schools in Texas and was a volunteer teacher in Medellin, Colombia. In 1971, Howell moved to Las Vegas and continued to teach at public schools for nineteen more years. After retiring, Howell served as president and legislative chairperson of the Nevada State Retired Teachers Association; the first vice president, and later president, of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada (RPEN); and as a member of the AdHoc committee for the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) of Nevada.

Howell was also a member of the Clark County Women’s Democratic Club, the Clark County Democratic Central Committee, and the State Central Committee. She served as the nominating chair for the League of Women Voters. In 1985, she was appointed by the Governor to a six year term to serve on the Advisory Board to the Southern Division of Aging Services. She also served as the President of Clark County Chapter of the National Council of Senior Citizens and as president and secretary of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Chapter #308. From 1986 through 1990, Howell was a lobbyist to the state legislature in Nevada.

Howell passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2006 at the age of 95.

In 2018, as part of a backlog elimination project, Christina Lamoureux rehoused the material and updated the existing finding aid to current professional standards.
