Ball, Renee OH-00064 02/28/2007 Blue Diamond Oral History Project Committee This is the history of Blue Diamond Village. Blue Diamond is located 26 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The village, originally known as Cottonwood Springs, changed its name when the Blue Diamond Company took ownership of the Gypsum mine and built corporate housing for the workers in the early '20s. Near the base of the Red Rock canyon, Blue Diamond Village was originally a stop on the Old Spanish Trail for traders from Santa Fe, N.M., to California between 1830 and 1848, according to the history committee's findings. road for the The Blue Diamond School opened in 1929. Barajas, Javier OH-03483 2018 September 20 Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project Javier Barajas was born in Michoacan, Mexico. He grew up mostly with his grandparents, helping them in their store "La Flor Michoacan." He first learned to cook by working with the nuns in seminary where he was educated. At the age of 18 Barajas left Michoacan to work in the United States. Eventually, Barajas found himself in Las Vegas, where he first found work at Terrible Herbst as a car washer. Through the car wash, Barajas made his first connection to the restaurant industry when he washed the car of the owner of "Viva Zapata." After a few years working as the executive chef for Viva Zapata, the restaurant closed down which led Barajas to open El Lindo Michoacan. Several years after it opened, Barajas has made Lindo Michoacan a staple in the Las Vegas food scene. Interview is conducted in Spanish. White and Stefani Evans on July 12, 2017 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Barlow discusses his upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada and growing up in the Westside. Barlow talks about his time as Councilman for Ward 5 in the City of Las Vegas, and lists what he accomplished from his campaign promises. He recalls his first projects as councilman, restoring the Westside School, and preserving historic buildings near downtown Las Vegas. Later, Barlow describes the issue of homelessness in Las Vegas, providing social services to people most in need, and improving the mental health system in Nevada. Lastly, Barlow discusses plans to redevelop Jackson Street and the Westside. no 0

Barrett, Christine OH-03747 2021-03-19 African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project Interviewed by Claytee D. White. Christine Kahn left Rosary Academy Boarding School as high school valedictorian, matriculated at Boston College for four years, and entered Carnegie Mellon University for graduate school earning a MS in Public Management and Policy. After a job in Arlington, VA, William Barrett helped her move across country to join her mother in California. They made it to Las Vegas where William, a member of the Air Force, was stationed. She decided to give the town a month's trial. The rest is history and what an amazing history it is. Christine Barrett soon secured a management job at The Water District and was instrumental in its phenomenal growth from 1986 to 2014. She was one of five female executives whose work ensured clean water for the Valley. When that career ended, she began her second successful career with the Clark County School District.
