Las Vegas Women Oral History Project |
F849.L35 B88 2006 Stella Butterfield's family, the Goldbergs, was Jewish, and she was born in the Bronx. During World War II she worked for the Coast Guard in the steno pool in Washington, D.C. Stella moved to Santa Monica a few years later while the war was still going on and worked briefly as a riveter for Douglas Aircraft and then as a teletype operator for the Air Force but at Douglas Aircraft. Because she had a hard time getting a job because of antisemitism, she changed her name to Gilbert. In December of 1948 she went to the Canal Zone in Panama to be the secretary of the commanding officer of the Panama Supply Depot. Stella was also a law reporter for court martials. She met Frank Butterfield, who was stationed there, and married him in 1952. He was transferred back to the United States, and they lived in Massachusetts. Then they moved to Los Angeles, and in 1953 they moved to Las Vegas, where she was a court reporter at Nellis Air Force Base. Then they moved to Mexico City, then back to California where she worked as a legal secretary. In early 1955 they moved back to Las Vegas, and Stella worked as a federal court reporter for Judge Roger T. Foley. |

Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project |
F850.S75 C35 2019 Eric Calvillo was born into a Mexican American household in San Jose, California in 1980. As he recalls, it was there that his fixation with the colors and recurring themes of his family’s Mexican roots told hold of his imagination. Today, this is core to his growing art career. Art has not been his sole ambition. Before moving to Las Vegas in 2005, Calvillo attended a San Francisco culinary school. He relocated to Las Vegas to complete his culinary internship at the prestigious Picasso restaurant at the Bellagio. Eventually, he began to pursue a professional art career as a painter of Día de los Muertos motifs and beautifully portray the Mexican tradition of celebrating the lives of the deceased. Through his use of acrylics and oil on canvas, Calvillo conveys the emotion of his culture and then, being a skilled carpenter, crafts his own frames. Subjects: Art, Mexican heritage, Dia de los Muertos. |

F849.L35 L354 2017 Session 1: In 1976, Bob Campbell, then city manager of Booneville, Missouri, brought his wife with him to Henderson to respond to the City of Henderson's ad for a city manager. Before the couple could settle in at the Town House Motel on Water Street, Bob was immediately whisked away to an evening City Council meeting. After a tour and job offer the next day, Bob accepted--mainly because he would have the opportunity to create something new on the blank canvas of Green Valley's 8,400 empty acres. After about five years he joined American Nevada Corporation as Senior Vice President and General Manager, mainly serving as liaison with the City. He then worked with Southwest Gas Corporation in public affairs under Bill Laub Sr. and Kenny Guinn before joining other Hendersonites who united with the Bass family of Texas to build Lake Las Vegas in January 1989. From 2004-2009, via The Campbell Co., he assisted with the development of Ascaya. Subjects: City of Henderson, NV; City Manager; American Nevada Corp.; Southwest Gas Corp.; Bass family, Fort Worth, TX; Lake Adair; Lake Mead; Lake Las Vegas; Ascaya; Lloyd Bentsen; Regional Flood Control District; Session 2: Bob's wife Pat joins this session.
