Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project |
Clara Alvarez loves America and Argentina. She is truly a citizen of the world with family roots in Spain, Genoa, and Argentina. Her years in Las Vegas though are precious. She lived here from 1966 until 1972 with years surrounding that period in Miami. Las Vegas was magical because she was happy here and was instrumental in the immigration of several family members who made this city their home. As a member of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, she secured her first position as a maid when that job category was reserved almost entirely to black women. She moved into waiting tables, serving cocktails, and then became a dealer. Her many Las Vegas memories include a story of Frank Sinatra giving her the paintings off the wall in his Sands hotel suite. Hotel ownership gave him permission to do so. Subjects: Sands, Argentina, Genoa, Caesars Palace, Miami, MOB, Frank Sinatra |

Amaya, Hernando |

Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project |
Session 1: Hernando Amaya was born in Bogota, Colombia and fondly remembers playing football as a part of the Seleccion Infantil de Millonarios, a local football club for youth. From childhood he had a deep passion for telling stories and writing. During high school, he started a school newspaper where students would publish parodies of telenovelas and local news. While his father hoped his children would follow in his footsteps and pursue careers in hospitality, Hernando desired to pursue his passion. He completed an undergraduate program in hospitality, but eventually received the opportunity to work for a Colombian radio station, which further confirmed for him his dream of studying journalism. He would later complete a specialization program in media communications while he worked for the national newspaper, El Espectador. During his time there, Hernando covered the Narco Terrorism occurring in Medellin, responded to the car bombs in the city, and witnessed many of the atrocities that have marked Colombian history. Eventually, he would get to serve as the news correspondent for the Presidential Palace of Colombia, also known as La Casa de Nariño. He shared his firsthand account of witnessing the taking over of the Palace of Justice by the Narco Terrorists and guerilla forces, and experiencing threats on his life for the work he was doing. Later, he would work with the Colombian military to develop a radio network in response to the a violent guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which used the radio to recruit young children and youth. While on-air, Hernando would receive a serious death threat from the FARC and later one targeted towards his family, which would be the driving force behind his migration to the United States. Hernando arrived to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001 and continued his career in journalism through El Tiempo, a local Latinx serving newspaper (which was later bought by the Las Vegas Review Journal). Hernando later became the editor and began to introduce new sections and themes geared towards international, national, and local news relevant to Latinx/os/as in the valley. After 12 years of service with El Tiempo, Hernando began working for Inmigracion.com, which provides immigration information and relevant news content in Spanish. He has previously served as the President for the Colombian Association of Las Vegas (COLAVE), was a member of the National Association of Hispanic Publications, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and previously volunteered for CHISPA, a local conservation organization. Interview is conducted in Spanish. Subjects: Colombia, Journalism, Immigration, Latinx, Narco-terrorism; Session 2: Hernando Amaya, a Colombian immigrant and first generation American shares his experiences immigrating to the U.S., working in Las Vegas, and becoming involved in developing resources for the immigrant community. Hernando discusses his service in the Colombian Association of Las Vegas (COLAVE), a Las Vegas organization that helps connect Colombians in the valley and hosts cultural community events. He served as Vice President, and later as President of the organization, and remains active in the community. Previously, they have conducted a census for documenting the number of Colombians in the valley, and were able to successfully convince the Colombian consulate to bring a voting booth to Las Vegas for local Colombians to participate in national elections. Additionally, he shares the work he has done to develop Inmigracion.com, a Spanish website that contains pertinent immigration news, updates, and resources for navigating the process and staying informed. He hopes that the Latinx community will build solidarity and unite in the years to come to support the progress of Latinos/as/xs in the valley. As a journalist, he reasserts the importance of knowing your culture, storytelling, learning history, and being civically active in the community. Interview is conducted in Spanish. Subjects: Immigration, Colombia, journalism, COLAVE, Latino, unity |

Remembering 1 October Oral History Project |
Interviewed by Claytee White. Jessica Anderson works for Get Outdoors Nevada, an industry that is fitting for the native Las Vegan who grew up playing outside until the street lights came on. Her current assignment is to manage the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden, a public place of respite designed in just 3 days after the shooting on October 1, 2017. The 58 trees signify the 58 lives lost and are planted to circle the center oak, the Tree of Life. Anderson has met many family members and friends calmed by the beauty of the garden. She talked of all the items left at the garden, 30,000 of which have been catalogued by the Nevada State Museum in Springs Preserve. Volunteers built the garden and Anderson talks of how they still come back to plant flowers and sit in the stillness. Subjects: Healing Garden, Jay Pleggenkuhle, Siegfried and Roy, Nevada State Museum, angel wings |
