You must complete a registration form during your first visit. After that, you only need to sign in each day.
You may request materials by completing call slips. All materials must be used in our reading room.
Food, drinks, gum, and tobacco products are not allowed. Please store these items in your locker.
You must store personal belongings, including bags, backpacks, laptop sleeves, and coats, in a locker before using materials.
Phone calls are not allowed in the reading room. Please step into the main library if you need to take a call.
To protect materials, use pencils only. Pens are not allowed.
Handle all materials with care. Keep items flat on the table and do not trace, write on, or fold them. Staff will provide supports for bound materials.

You may request multiple boxes, but you may use only one box at a time. Remove one folder at a time and use out cards to mark your place.
You may take photos or self-scan most materials, provided this does not damage materials or violate copyright. Staff may restrict equipment use if necessary. Feeder scanners are not allowed.
We reserve the right to limit or refuse access to materials when necessary.
Visitors and patrons are welcome to explore the Special Collections reading room on their own. Those wishing to visit the inner reading room are asked to leave their bags (including purses) at the front desk before entering.
Outside organizations with three or more individuals may also schedule a more detailed tour with staff where we can provide general or customized information on our collections or a behind the scenes look at preservation lab, or digitization lab. Please fill out our tour form to schedule a tour for your organization, pending staff availability.
A research trip to Special Collections and Archives will be different from a typical visit to the library. Look at the list below to get an idea of the steps involved in a visit to our reading room.
Watch our visiting Special Collections video.
- Before you arrive, search Special Collections and Archives (finding aids) to identify collections and boxes you would like to use.
- For books, consult the library catalog.
- Even if you need only a few folders, we will bring you the entire box. Be sure to record box numbers rather than folder numbers.
- On your first visit, you will complete and sign a registration form. This form is valid for one calendar year.
- At each visit, sign in at the front desk with your arrival time and research topic. You will receive a locker for your belongings. Food and drinks, including water bottles, must be stored in the locker.
- Our materials are stored in closed stacks. To request materials, fill out a call slip.
- Use one call slip per item. Include your name, the collection name and number, and the box number. Take a seat in the reading room, and we will bring your materials to you.
- Use one folder at a time, keep materials flat on the table, and use an out card to mark your place. Ask for gloves if you are using photographs.
- When you finish, return materials to the front desk. If you would like us to hold them for a future visit, let us know.
- Before you leave, return your locker key, collect your belongings, and sign out at the front desk.
