Accessing Library Databases from Off-Campus

Requirements for Remote Access

  1. Have status as a currently enrolled/employed student, faculty, staff member, or as a current library-authorized affiliate of the university.

Due to licensing restrictions required by publishers who produce electronic resources, off-campus access to the databases is limited to authorized users. Only currently enrolled students and/or currently employed staff or faculty of UNLV can access licensed databases from off-campus. Alumni are not eligible for this privilege.

  2. Possess an activated UNLV Library Barcode.

Within forty-eight hours after getting your RebelCard the barcode on the back of the card is automatically activated for using databases from off-campus. You will need to register this barcode at a library Circulation Desk if you wish to check out books. For more information contact the Circulation Department at 895-2111.

  3. Have Web access and Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer version 3 or later.

You must be running Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator version 3.x or above to connect from off-campus.

  4. Have cookies and javascript enabled in your browser and any pop-up blocker software disabled.

Many of the databases and e-journals require that you have cookies and javascript turned on in your browser. Some use pop-up windows to display information. These settings are located under Edit->preferences in Netscape and under Tools->Internet Options in Internet Explorer.

Accessing databases

Once you meet all of the requirements simply click on the database you wish to use. You should see a screen asking for your name and your library barcode.

If you are having problems accessing from off-campus, try our Off-Campus Access FAQ, or use our problem report form to contact a staff member for assistance.
