- Keep in mind there may be language differences between American and British English Cotton refers to a type of plant, fabric, or to thread in Britain, but in the United States the word cotton is not synonymous with thread. American users and others not familiar with British English may find the Brief Guide to British English located in the help sections of the database very helpful. Modern-day names of historical events may not necessarily be the terms used as the event occurred. For example, while we now refer to World War II, at the time it was referred to as "Hitler’s War" or the "war in Europe," among others.
- An asterisk (*) stands for any number of characters, including none, and is especially useful when you want to find all words that share the same root. For example, pigment* matches pigment, pigments, pigmentation, etc. A question mark (?) stands for exactly one character and is especially useful when you're uncertain of a spelling. For example, a search like relev?nce means you can match the word relevance even if, like many of us, you can't remember whether it's spelled with ance or ence. A question mark is also useful for finding certain words with variant spellings. For example, defen?e finds both defense (American) and defence (British and Canadian). Multiple question marks in a row stand for the same number of characters as there are question marks. For example, psych????y matches either psychology or psychiatry but not psychotherapy.
- Use Advanced Search if you wish to search a specific of the paper. With this search, you can limit your search to advertisements, pictures, editorials, obituaries etc.
