The Hoover's Online database provides detailed coverage of public and private companies.
- View industry analysis by searching for industry name, product name, SIC code, or NAICS code.
- Locate information about key executives and IPOs.
- Build lists of companies by location, size, industry, number of employees, financial parameters, and more.
Hoover’s is one of the few sources with extensive information on private corporations.
Search tips:
- To search a specific phrase, enclose the entire phrase in quotation marks. To look for two words not necessarily next to each other, use the word AND (in all capital letters) between them.
- The Hoover's search engine offers four types of searches - Companies, People, Industries, and News. Each of these search types lets you search using a variety of criteria. For example, you can search for companies by name, ticker, D-U-N-S Number, or keywords (such as product names).
On the Hoover's home page, the search tool is located in the upper left portion of the screen under Search for business information. There are four tabs - Companies, People, Industries, and News. To choose a search type, click on its tab. On every other page of the Hoover's website, the search tool is located on the right side of the menu bar. Select your search type from the list.
- Company, People, and Industry search results are initially ordered by relevancy based on the position and frequency of your search term's appearance in a given record, among other factors. You can re-sort your search results by name, location, sales, or company type. News search results are returned in chronological order, but relevance also plays a part. For example, if your search term appears multiple times within an article that is published on a given day, that article will be listed before other articles published on the same day in which your search term only appears once.
- Build A List results are initially returned in alphabetical order by company name, but you can re-sort your results by location, sales, total employees, or phone number. If you Build A List of People, the results are returned in alphabetical order by last name, and you can re-sort by Name, Title, Company Name, or Location.
