
The Encyclopaedia of Islam (New Edition) offers an overview of Western perspectives on the Islamic world. Descriptive articles cover:
- Muslims of many origins, tribes, and dynasties
- crafts and sciences
- political and religious institutions
- geography, ethnography, flora, and fauna of the various countries
- history, topography, and monuments of the major towns and cities
In its geographical and historical scope it encompasses the old Arabo-Islamic empire, the Islamic countries of Iran, Central Asia, the Indian sub-continent and Indonesia, the Ottoman Empire, and all other Islamic countries.

- The article view shows you the main content in the Brill Online site. It may include the following features:
- Links: bold words contain links to other articles. Click the right mouse button to open in a new window.
- Previous and next links: to navigate you to the preceding and succeeding article in the work.
- Table of contents: the immediate context of the article in the parent work.
- Related articles: links to other articles in the current product which are linked from the current article.
- Search results navigation: if you have reached the article as a result of a search, you can navigate to the next and previous search result, as well as return to your result list using these links.
- Citation footer: gives a citation for the current article using the style of the Modern Languages Association.
- If you type more than one word in the search box, the search engine will retrieve all articles that contain all the terms, wherever they appear in the article. If you want more precision and just want to search for the exact phrase, you must include the phrase in double quotes, e.g., "arabic script".
- The wild card or truncation symbols available are the ? and the *. You can use the "?" symbol to perform a single character wildcard search; or you can use the "*" symbol for zero or more characters.
For example, jo? will match job and joy. The term jo* will also match jonah, john, and journey. Neither operator can be used as the first character of a term.
Where is it :
Go to the UNLV Libraries' home page. Under Find, select Articles, then under Article databases by name, click on the letter E and select Encyclopaedia of Islam.
