The World Tourism Organization is an intergovernmental organization established to offer a framework for the international consideration of tourism policy matters as well as other subjects of interest to the sector. Its global mission is to support sustainable tourism development yielding wealth, creating employment, and promoting better understanding between human beings worldwide of all races and religions.
The WTO elibrary is a database of all of the United Nations World Tourism Organization publications from 1970 to the present. Access to over 500 publications and the latest tourism statistics for all the countries around the world.
Advanced search features allow for navigation of the resources and e-alerts keep users up-to-date on the latest additions to the database.
Search tips:
- For the most current statistics use the tourism factbook, accessed from the bar on the left side of the any page in the database. Once in the factbook, select a country from the drop down box. The information will be displayed in the form of a PDF document.
- Another good source of current comparative statistics is the World Tourism Barometer, which is published three times per year. It can be found under the subject Tourism Forecasts in a list at the bottom of the WTO elibrary main page. This data is by region (Asia, Africa, Europe etc) and by major countries.
- The search engine will search for concepts within the documents included in the database. However, the retrieval does not bring you to the place within the document that contains your keywords.
You must scan the documents retrieved manually to find the information you are looking for. For example, if you search for arrivals, your retrieval will be a list of a number of documents that include information on tourist arrivals.
