CIRCULATION POLICY FOR PUBLIC BORROWERS

To assist members of the local community with their specialized research needs not otherwise met by their local public libraries, the UNLV Libraries extend borrowing privileges to the public in accordance with the policies and conditions described below. The University Libraries are not affiliated with the Las Vegas-Clark County, Boulder City, Henderson, or North Las Vegas library districts.

WHERE CAN I GET A LIBRARY CARD?

Public borrowers may get a card at the Circulation Desk in Lied Library or in any of our branch libraries (Music, Architecture Studies, or Curriculum Materials).

    REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Residents of Clark County and Pahrump, age 18 or older, may borrow books from the UNLV Libraries upon registration in the Libraries' automated circulation system. To register, the borrower must present a valid Nevada driver's license or Nevada ID card showing a local street address. The registrant must also allow the UNLV Libraries to place on file the imprint of a valid major credit card and authorize the UNLV Libraries to charge uncollected fines, fees, and replacement costs of items that have been damaged or not returned.

High school students under 18 may borrow books if they are enrolled in a course for credit at UNLV or CCSN ( Community College of Southern Nevada). Those enrolled at CCSN must register for library privileges at one of the CCSN branches.

Active duty military personnel may register by presenting a valid military ID card along with proof of residency.

    LIBRARY CARD FEES

    First Registration Free
    First Replacement $1.00
    Subsequent Replacements $5.00

Library cards will expire one year from the date of registration or 60 days before the expiration date of your credit card, whichever comes first. To update your card, you must show a valid Nevada driver's license or Nevada ID card with a local street address, and a valid credit card if the previous one has expired.

Remember! Your library card is like a credit card, and you are responsible for all items checked out on it. If your card is lost or stolen, notify the UNLV Library Circulation Desk immediately at 895-2111.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP BOOKS OUT?

Books may be checked out for a period of two weeks, and may be renewed once (unless a hold request has been placed on them).

Current dues-paying members of the UNLV Alumni Association should inquire about special privileges at the Circulation Desk at Lied or any of the UNLV Libraries' branches (ASL, CML, and Music).

All books are subject to immediate recall if needed by UNLV faculty or students. Public borrowers may not place recalls on books, but holds may be placed at any of the Libraries' circulation desks.

Books may be returned to the library from which you borrowed them or to any of the book drops located throughout the campus. Books that are returned to a book drop when the library is closed will be checked in and backdated to the last day when the library was open.

UNLV Library books may also be returned to any of the Community College branch libraries, Nevada State College, or to the Law Library at UNLV. Books returned to the Las Vegas or Clark County public libraries will remain charged to your card until they reach the UNLV Libraries, and you will be responsible for fees assessed on overdue materials.

    RENEWING BOOKS

Books cannot be renewed by telephone. However, if your card is in good standing (i.e., no money owed, no overdue items, library card is not expired), you may renew books once online by following the instructions posted at http://www.library.unlv.edu/circ/renewonl.html. If another patron has placed a hold on a book, it may not be renewed. If renewing in person, you must have the books and your library card with you.

YOU MUST PRESENT YOUR LIBRARY CARD TO CIRCULATION STAFF WHEN CHECKING OUT OR RENEWING ALL LIBRARY MATERIALS.

HOW MANY BOOKS CAN I CHECK OUT?

Public borrowers are limited to a maximum of five books checked out on the system, which includes UNLV and Community College libraries.

    FINES AND LOST BOOKS

Fines are assessed on overdue books at $.20 per day per book, to a maximum of $15.00. The system will charge overdue fines beginning the first day the book is overdue, but will not generate a bill for a fine that is less than $1.00. Overdue fines continue to accrue on holidays and other days when the UNLV Libraries are closed. Books returned to a book drop when the UNLV Libraries are closed will be checked in backdated to the last day the library was open. Fines on recalled books not returned by the new due date on the recall notice will be assessed at the rate of $2.00 per day, per book, with no maximum.

When a book is overdue more than 28 days, it will be declared lost and you will be charged the replacement cost of the book plus a nonrefundable $35.00 processing fee. If you have neither returned nor paid for the item three weeks after the bill is generated, the replacement cost and processing fee will be charged to your credit card. Overdue and recall fines in excess of $5.00 which have remained unpaid three weeks after the overdue items are returned will also be charged to your credit card. Should your credit line be insufficient to cover those charges, your account will be sent to a collection agency and you will be additionally liable for all collection and litigation costs. Patrons with overdue books and/or outstanding charges will lose their borrowing privileges.

NOTE! NOTICES ARE MAILED OUT ONLY AS A COURTESY. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE NOTICES YOU ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR RETURNING OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS AND/OR FINES INCURRED. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO NOTIFY THE LIBRARY OF ANY ADDRESS CHANGES, SO THAT YOU MAY RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF OVERDUE MATERIALS OR FINES OWED.

    Computer Access in Lied Library

Your library card allows you to access the UNLV library research materials (learn more). Your patron ID (barcode number) serves as your login number.
