Establishing Local Subject Headings Using the 690 Field

The MARC 690 field will be used by Bibliographic and Metadata Services for locally established subject headings that are not addressed adequately by Library of Congress subject headings.
  1. Individual doing cataloging sees a need for a subject heading.
    1. Check to see if LC has a heading that will suit - use if available.
    2. If no LC subject heading can be found
      1. Determine what the preferred heading should be.
      2. Use it on the bibliographic record, including on OCLC originals
      3. Provide bibliographic record and photocopy of appropriate page(s) where proposed term is used to authority control person. It is not necessary to find all uses of the term, but at least one source from item being cataloged is strongly encouraged by SACO.

  2. Authority control person will evaluate the subject heading.
    1. If subject heading is appropriate, authority control person will create an authority record on Innopac with appropriate see references and notes
    2. If authority control person locates an LC subject heading that is suitable s/he will change the 690 field to the appropriate LC heading, add the proposed 690 as a see reference to the LC heading and change the bib record on Innopac and OCLC if it is an original.
    3. If local heading appears to be an appropriate candidate for consideration by the Library of Congress (SACO) authority control person will submit it.

  3. Submitted subject headings are approved or disapproved.
    1. When authority person learns of the approval of submitted item s/he will locate all occurances of the approved heading and change our records accordingly.
    2. Originals on OCLC will also be changed when possible.
