Local Fields in MARC Records

910

The 910 field contains one or more two or three-letter codes used to facilitate access to groups of records, such as all records originating from a special project. The 910 field indicators are both blank.

Do not use multiple 910 fields. Instead, list all applicable codes in one 910 field, separated by comma space:
910 gc, tx

910 codes: ar = Amigos retro (one-time use for a project)

911 The 911 field contains the cataloger's initials. This information may be automatically input from the OCLC record using the appropriate OCLC macro, or manually added after the record has been exported. The 911 field indicators are both blank.
936 The 936 field is used for serials/periodicals holdings verification. See Serials procedures for information on using this field.
945 The 945 field is used for the GPO overlay code. It is used by Marcive to overlay brief records with fuller ones and occassionally to replace records. This is done using load tables and using the 945 removes the risk a non-Marcive record will be accidently overlaid or replaced.
949 See Multiple volume/Copy Item Records for detailed information on subfields, codes, etc. used in this field.

The 949 0 blank has many subfields. Most of these subfields will transfer to the item record when the record is exported from OCLC into Innopac. Others will remain solely in the bibliographic record after export.

|a is the location code. This location code maps only to the item record and does not affect the bibliographic location code. Unlike the 049, five letter location codes can be entered here.

|g produces a 949 "library has" statement. It is used to list the number of volumes the library has and is displayed to the public. Unlike the |v, it does not map to the item record, and is not added to the call number in the public display.

|i maps to the item call number, which will display in place of the bibliographic call number.

|k indicates how many copies of an item is held. See Multiple volume/Copy Item Records for detailed information.

|m is an item message note and generates a pop up message when circulated. A common use of this subfield is to notify circulation of pocket material accompanying the item.

|p contains the barcode and maps to the item record's barcode field.

|r maps to the price field, it is not currently used, but has been reserved for future use.

|s is for item status. In cataloging, the most commonly used codes are b (bindery), j (online) and o (library use only). The default (blank) is circulating and is not added when cataloging.

|t maps to the item type, which affects loan rules. The default I-type is 000 for books, scores etc. and is not added when cataloging. I-type codes are:

|v maps to the item record's volume field and is added to the call number in the public display. This does not map to the bibliographic record's 949 "library has" statement. |v is not used in conjunction with|i (item record call number). When |i is used, the volume number is added to the |i instead. See Multiple volume/Copy Item Records for detailed information.

|w does not transfer to the item record. It is an internal notes field for recording information for BMS staff, for example when an URL was verified and added to the record, or that the latest edition belongs in reference.

|x creates a note in the item record. This note does not appear to the public, nor does it generate a pop up message at the circulation desk. For example, this subfield is used to record the CML Gift note.

The 949 field with indicators blank-2 is used only in OCLC for export information (overlay code, cataloger's initials). *ins=[cataloger's initials]; generates a 911 with initials when exported and ov-.o[number]; provides the information to overlay using an order record number upon export. .b[number]; can be used to overlay with the bibliographic number when no order record is present (during retrospective cataloging projects, for example).

The 949 field with both indicators blank is used for serial holdings statements, based on ANSI standard Z39.44-1986 Level 4 (modified).
