Cataloging of Bound-With Items
Overview
You may encounter a case where two or more completely separate items have been bound together, either
by us or someone else who is not the publisher. In such a case, it is necessary
to catalog each item independently, each with its own bibliographic record. All such records will share
the same single item record, which will be x-linked between the various records. All records will also
share a single call number, which will be the one that actually appears on the item.
Do not confuse "bound-withs" with cases where the publisher has actually published two or more works
together in one volume. In such cases, a single bibliographic record is normally used for the entire
volume. See AACR2 2.1G, etc. for more information on such cases.
Monographic Items
Catalog the first item in the volume, assigning an appropriate call number for that
item.
Note: When cataloging monographic items bound together which are not part of a numbered set or
serial, it is not necessary to add item call numbers when x-linking item records (see below).
- Add a 910 field, with the codes bw, mx:
910 bw, mx
- If the item has a cover or spine title, add a 246 field with appropriate indicators (34 for cover title,
38 for spine title) and a note (500) reading "Spine title: [the spine title]" or "Cover title: [the cover title]":
246 34 Novels of Jack London
500 Cover title: Novels of Jack London.
- Add standard 949s with overlay code, initials, and barcode. This record will be the master
record, where the item record will "live."
- Add a 501 With note, which should include the main title statement (or uniform title, if
one is present), the statement of responsibility, and the publication, etc. statement (260 field) of the
other item(s) bound with the one being described in this record.
- 501 With: The call of the Wild / Jack London. New York : Doubleday, c1897.
- Update and export the record into INNOPAC.
Separately catalog each remaining item in the bound volume as if it were an entirely separate work.
In each record:
- Assign the exact same call number as that assigned to the first item in the volume.
- Add a 910 field, with the codes bw, xl:
910 bw, xl
- If the item has a cover or spine title, add a 246 field with appropriate indicators (34 for cover title,
38 for spine title) and a note (500) reading "Spine title: [the spine title]" or "Cover title: [the cover title]."
246 34 Novels of Jack London
500 Cover title: Novels of Jack London.
This should be identical for all items in the bound volume!
- Add 949s with overlay code, initials, and location code, but no barcode. This record will later be x-linked to
the master record and should not be assigned a barcode.
- Add a 501 With note, which should include the main title statement (or uniform title, if
one is present), the statement of responsibility, and the publication, etc. statement (260 field) of the
other item(s) bound with the one being described in this record. This statement will be different for each
record for each item bound in the volume.
501 With: White Fang / Jack London. New York : J. Stanford, c1893.
- Update and export the record into INNOPAC, noting the record number (.b-------) assigned during export.
- In INNOPAC, call up the master record for the volume (the record for the first item in the volume). Display
the item record. X-link the item record to the additional record you just exported by pressing x and entering the
record number for the record. Verify that it is the correct record and confirm with y.
- Call up the additional record which you just exported into INNOPAC, and delete the extra item record
(the one without a barcode) which was created during export. The only item record remaining should be that which you
x-linked to this record.
Repeat as necessary for any additional items bound into the volume.
For more detailed information on the x-linking of records, see
X-Linking Procedures: Analyzed Sets.
