Cataloging of Bound-With Items

Overview

You may encounter a case where two or more completely separate items have been bound together, either by us or someone else who is not the publisher. In such a case, it is necessary to catalog each item independently, each with its own bibliographic record. All such records will share the same single item record, which will be x-linked between the various records. All records will also share a single call number, which will be the one that actually appears on the item.

Do not confuse "bound-withs" with cases where the publisher has actually published two or more works together in one volume. In such cases, a single bibliographic record is normally used for the entire volume. See AACR2 2.1G, etc. for more information on such cases.

Monographic Items

Catalog the first item in the volume, assigning an appropriate call number for that item.

Note: When cataloging monographic items bound together which are not part of a numbered set or serial, it is not necessary to add item call numbers when x-linking item records (see below).
Separately catalog each remaining item in the bound volume as if it were an entirely separate work. In each record: Repeat as necessary for any additional items bound into the volume.

For more detailed information on the x-linking of records, see X-Linking Procedures: Analyzed Sets.
