Life out of balance

Koyaanisqatsi = Life out of balance [DVD]
Arch Media PN1995.9.E96 K68 2002

Glenn's Comment from the ASL Blog: ... "Since I have not seen all of the movies listed here[ASL Blog], I can only strongly recommend (instead of wishfully require) that design students watch Koyaanisqatsi, a film produced by Francis Ford Coppola. While several new movie initiatives present clear problems and prescribe specific remedies, Coppola's 1982 (timeless) motion picture invites contemplation and discussion of alternative modes of interpretation and remediation regarding our roles in the environment/life. The film is available at Lied Library [and in the ASL]. Email me if you want to watch and discuss".

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.
UNLV Bk Stks PS3535.A547 F6 1994

Comment: ... "For the student that is debating between ‘majoring’ in music or architecture: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. When I came to this junction (not too long ago) esteemed composer and director Stephen Melillo listened to my dilemma and suggested that I read this book. I didn’t know what it was, so I expected to read it and choose the musical path. Long story short, here I am. Did Stephen think I’d choose otherwise? I should let him know that I thank him in my graduate thesis at Cornell University". (ASL note: the Fountainhead is also available for checkout as a VHS movie )

A whack on the side of the head: how you can be more creative
Arch Bk Stks: BF408 .V58 1998

Comment: ... "For the student that is still hesitant to take academic risks: A Whack On The Side Of The Head by Roger von Oech. Followed by A Kick In The Seat Of The Pants (Arch Bk Stks: BF408 .V579 1986) for those that are still timid. Several of the world’s best discoveries happen when someone goes out on a limb or thinks weigh outside the box. This book steers you in these wonderfully “wrong” directions."(View additioanal information)

Flatland : a romance of many dimensions / Edwin Abbott Abbott
UNLV Bk Stks: QA699 .A13 1991
Available to read directly online at: http://www.ibiblio.org/eldritch/eaa/FL.HTM

Comment: . .."If you are taking, have took, or will take a 2D or 3D graphics course, get lost in Flatland by Edwin Abbott Abbott. Being so emotionally attached to a square is what architecture is all about… at least when it comes to creating visual representations of architecture." (View additional information).

The soundscape of modernity : architectural acoustics and the culture of listening in America, 1900-1933 / Emily Thompson
Arch Bk Stks: NA2800 .T48 2002

Comment: ... "Perhaps students in all of the disciplines of the school would enjoy The Soundscape of Modernity by Emily Thompson. It is a very thorough analysis of the built environment at the turn of the last century through one of the senses that is too often ‘over-looked’. Imagine when all senses are employed to this degree of experience." (view additional information)

Chora L works : Jacques Derrida and Peter Eisenman / edited by Jeffrey Kipnis and Thomas Leeser
Arch Bk Stks: NA737.E33 A2 1997

Comment: ... "If you have time to read this (hopefully you do), and you think it’s great (hopefully you don’t), I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts: Chora L Works : Jacques Derrida and Peter Eisenman. " (view additional information)

The glass bead game : (Magister Ludi) / Herman Hesse
UNLV Bk Stks: PT2617.E85 G513 1990

Comment: ... "Designing for sensation is one thing, but designing for concept formation and concept integration is another (more admirable). In professions that are becoming more and more interdisciplinary, student designers ought to exercise their capacity to create connections between varying fields. Magister Ludi would have made a great Howard Roark (but not the other way around). Read Herman Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game." (view additional information)
