Project description/narrative:
Nathan Adelson Hospice
With the construction of a new facility, the decision was made to take the opportunity to reduce water consumption and maintenance by converting much of the existing turf to more environmentally appropriate landscaping. Throughout the design process, JWZ worked with Hospice staff to ensure they were informed and had a voice in the design outcome. The staff emphasized that the preservation of the large existing pine and eucalyptus trees was of great importance.
The final design was completed in tow phases. The first phase was the portion at the new facility and the street side area of the existing facility. This phase includes meandering, memorial walking paths which are accented with flowering groundcovers in the foreground and complementary evergreen shrubs beyond. In addition to the preservation of the large existing trees wherever possible, and at the request of the Hospice staff, a small portion of turf was retained to keep some of the original feeling.
The second phase consisted of redesign of an interior courtyard, and several private family areas adjacent to the patient rooms. The interior courtyard replaced a dated fountain that was in disrepair with a small waterfall and stream that bisects the courtyard. A small Ramada was tucked into a corner to provide a seating area that allows for views across the courtyard. Each of the family areas were sensitive to allow varying levels of privacy and each area incorporates some form of water which creates a soothing affect, and provides additional privacy.
