Sunset Park Master Plan
Sunset Park consists of 325 acres of which 185 are currently developed and 140 acres are in an unrefined and natural condition. The Sunset Park Master Plan illustrates the goals and recommendations for future park development over a 20-year phase period. The plan is the beginning of a process that will evolve through time as specific program needs are identified. A study area analysis was done to compile information ranging from adjacent land use to existing infrastructure and pinpoint the opportunities and constraints of the site. A conceptual design was then completed indicating the desired uses and amenities for the site. The entire existing park was reconsidered in terms of vehicular and pedestrian circulation to make the lake at the heart of the park the overall central focal point.
The proposed relocated active recreational amenities would include: 4 baseball pickup fields, 10 basketball courts, 13 sand volleyball courts, 8 tennis courts, and 15 acres of festival area. The proposed relocated passive recreational amenities would include: bird-watching opportunities in the native mesquite bosques, 5 separate tot lot locations, a fenced large and small dog park, several horseshoe pits and group picnic areas, a jogging path, and undeveloped interpretive trails and dunes. New amenities would include: a children’s museum, a recreational center, a central promenade for vendors and open space plaza, a trailhead with view tower at the dunes, and a water play area.
