Name of Project: Nevada Veterans’ Nursing Home

Project Location: Boulder City, Nevada

Project Type: Institutional

Client: State of Nevada

The design of the Nevada Veterans’ Nursing Home concentrates on the creation of a comfortable environment with positive stimulus for the elderly. Comprehensive research in psychiatric and geriatric care led to the use of design strategies that combat problems faced in this type of environment. Therapeutic stimulation both physical and sensual as well as remembrance therapy have proven to be positive influences on patients’ moods and ability to relax. The design approaches used to best serve this particular user group were the incorporation a return-path (figure eight) system, ample shaded seating, non-poisonous and non-toxic plant material, and the avoidance of shadowy areas. Return path system offers Alzheimer patients the opportunity for physical activity in a safe environment. Shaded seating areas allow patients to enjoy and be comfortable in all of the multiple courtyard areas. Use of non-hazardous plant material lessens the likelihood of health problems resulting from contact with or ingestion of poisonous vegetation. Many elderly patients are plagued with compromised vision; the avoidance of shadowy areas prevents the possibility of a patient mistaking shadows for something else. The Nevada Veterans’ Nursing Home design provides a safe environment that increases the quality of life for the residents and staff as well as providing multiple therapeutic options.
