Narrative Palomar Park Creative elements within small spaces. This half-acre park in the Las Vegas valley is a small sanctuary within a master planned neighborhood. With the focal point being a custom trellis structure back-dropped by pine trees and surrounded by grassy open-space, the park becomes an inviting passive space. The trellis structure, designed by the Landscape Architect, is constructed with concrete masonry unity and steel to withstand the harsh desert climate. “I” beams support the latticework that curves around an arcing pathway. The top of the structure is pitched to create an inviting sense to the park space. The orientation of the trellis structure is situated in such a way to shade the sitting space and create a comfortable environment. The Landscape Architect incorporates lighting for nightly use and evening aesthetic appeal. The structure, as well as the trees, are highlighted and give the park goers a more sense of security. The use of drought tolerant, yet lush plantings give the park color and provide for a soft and comfortable plant palette. Indigenous rock mulch and field-select boulders protect the soil from the gusty desert winds and help slow the evaporation of moisture from the soil. Turf has been placed to create open space for play while not allowing for over-spray onto adjacent walls or into streets. The park had several challenges including ADA issues and low water pressures. ADA issues were addressed by the strategic placement and meander of walkways. And low precipitation rate irrigation heads were used to combat low water pressures. |
