The Las Vegas Livable Communities Charrette was sponsored by the Las Vegas Review Journal
with Larry Scarpa, Gene Pasinski, Eric Strain,
Kasey Baker, Randy Barnes, Lance Kirk, Arnie Stalk,
Mike Corrente, Paul Fenkell, and others
April 8-9 at the UNLV School of Architecture
The charrette begins Saturday at 10 am on the SOA second floor. Four different sites have been selected throughout the Las Vegas Valley with connection to existing rail transportation and water. Teams of five to six AAE 282 students along with professional members of the design community as team leaders and members of the UNLV SOA Developing Sustainable Design class as resources, will develop designs for a sustainable community.  




 

Lawrence Scarpa is the principal-in-charge of design at Pugh + Scarpa and has been practicing architecture since 1989. He is also an educator in design and construction technology with a special emphasis on sustainability. In 1997, the Academy of Architecture Arts and Sciences named Mr. Scarpa as one of the top 39 architects worldwide under age thirty-nine. Mr. Scarpa¹s commitment to building sustainable communities is demonstrated by his success in garnering public and private support for his projects. Mr. Scarpa received a $75,000 grant from the United States Department of Energy for implementation of the Electric Vehicle Charging Station, a demonstration project located at City Hall in Santa Monica. He also received a total of $500,000 in funding (with Dr. John Ingersoll) from the United States Department of Energy, the California Energy Coalition, the Southern California Gas Company, the Regional Energy Efficiency Initiative and the City of Santa Monica to develop and implement energy efficient strategies for Colorado Court. Complementing his professional and academic activities, Scarpa is also a co-founder and current board member of Livable Places, Inc., a non-profit development company. Additionally, he is a co-founder of the A+D Architecture and Design Museum Los Angeles, and serves on the editorial board for LA Architect magazine and the Board of Directors for the AIA/LA.
