IE06001 Design approach/Narrative: The existing store provided a closed facade to the shopper. The owner’s intent was to provide as much access to the sales associates and casework as possible while maintaining a casual approach. One of the primary design tasks involved working with the mall review committee and exploring design solutions to open the façade of the store to the customer. In order to increase the approachability of the store, we provided translucent materials in addition to open areas to engage the customer both on a visual and tactile level. The lighting design was of critical importance. As the lighting code had recently been modified, the client was unprepared for the restrictions that would limit the amount of overhead lighting allowed. Color of lighting and spacing greatly impacts the perception of the diamonds and therefore had to be carefully designed and detailed. In-case lighting was provided in addition to overhead lights for optimum flexibility.
