Design approach/Narrative: The modern home for a family of five had to first be integrated into the topography of the site without cutting down any trees in the forest. The plan of the houses weaves between large existing pine trees, at the same time gently stepping with the topography. The garage and mechanical space tucks under the main level of the residence, again using the sloping topography to hide the garage from all views important to the residents.

The main house is sited to catch a spectacular view of the Eastern Sierras, from all of the main spaces in the house and patio areas. The view is also enhanced by a simple ridge with forest that creates a dramatic foreground to the distant mountain views. The house is physically linked to the ridge with a path culminating in a library out building. All materials are natural in character. The natural gray CMU has black cider with a sand-blasted finish. The sloped roofs and fascias are steel with a rusted finish. The structure is clearly expressed with exposed glu-lam beams and structured 2x6 wood decking.

The residence is tied to its site with views from the inside to the wooded exterior with large areas of store front commercial windows and large sliding doors. An exterior living room is provided for the ultimate in indoor/outdoor relationship. The window and lighting are also minimal with an emphasis on honesty of materials, as well as rich woods contrasting with rough concrete and masonry.
