Design approach/Narrative: The modern home for a family of five had to first be integrated into the topography of the site without cutting down any trees in the forest. The plan of the houses weaves between large existing pine trees, at the same time gently stepping with the topography. The garage and mechanical space tucks under the main level of the residence, again using the sloping topography to hide the garage from all views important to the residents. The residence is tied to its site with views from the inside to the wooded exterior with large areas of store front commercial windows and large sliding doors. An exterior living room is provided for the ultimate in indoor/outdoor relationship. The window and lighting are also minimal with an emphasis on honesty of materials, as well as rich woods contrasting with rough concrete and masonry.
